Throwback photo reveals what Ohio ‘house of horrors’ mom looked like years before her mugshot

As the disturbing case involving 16 children rescued from an alleged “house of horrors” in Ohio continues to unfold, an old photo of the mother at the center of the case has begun circulating online.

Authorities arrived at the Ohio home while investigating an unrelated crime, where they found 16 children living in conditions that have been described as “pure evil.”

The children, who range in age from 18 months to 18 years, were allegedly confined for much of the past four years inside a single 12-by-12-foot room. According to authorities, the family had moved frequently over the years, and none of the children had ever been enrolled in school.

Describing the conditions as “deplorable,” Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson said the children were in “danger at the time” they were discovered.

“They looked like almost feral animals. It was terrible,” the attorney general said, per CBS News. “This really looked third world.”

Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Cain added: “Most of their livestock was kept in better condition than their children.”

All 16 children are now in the temporary custody of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. Finding foster placements for such a large group of siblings, many with severe developmental needs, is expected to be extremely challenging.

The parents, Elizabeth Siders, 33, and Gary Siders Jr., 36, along with grandparents Gary Siders Sr., 73, and Christina Siders, 67, have each been charged with 16 counts of second-degree felony child endangerment.

The case has drawn widespread attention, with many expressing horror over the conditions authorities say the children endured. Thomas Stolly, the attorney representing the children’s mother, however, told the Associated Press (AP) that “evil requires malice,” adding that he did “not see any malice in Elizabeth.”

According to Mason County public records, Elizabeth married the children’s father, Gary Siders Jr., on March 31, 2008, when she was 15 years old. Gary was 19 at the time.

“I think that this is more so a case of isolation than a case of evil, and I think that there’s an important distinction there,” Stolly told the outlet. “Because if that’s all you know – and you have to think someone at 15 years old doesn’t know a whole lot about being an adult, about being a mother, about being a wife – and that’s been your worldview for the past 17 or 18 years, you get shaped by that.

“I think it may be too early to actually determine what was going on there.”

“While the headlines may be sensational, there’s a real human component to this and so I would ask people to give this process time to play out.”

Elizabeth, Gary Jr., and Christina Siders are being held on $300,000 bond, while Gary Siders Sr. has been released on a recognizance bond because of what has been described as a “serious medical condition.”

According to a court filing reviewed by Fox affiliate WCMH, the 33-year-old mother has asked to be released from jail as the case moves forward.

Her attorney, J. Thomas Stolly, wrote: “Through conversations with Counsel, the Defendant maintains that her principal desire (is) to reunite with her children; she understands that reunification of any sort is an impossibility if she does not appear before this Court,” according to LADbible.

As the legal process continues, an old photo of Elizabeth has also resurfaced online. The image was reportedly shared by her mother, whom she has since reportedly grown estranged from, to mark her 28th birthday.

“Happy Birthday to my daughter Elizabeth it hard to believe. My youngest is 28 today love you, mom and dad,” the caption reads, according to VT.

According to reports, Elizabeth became estranged from her family after marrying Gary. As investigators continue working to piece together what happened inside the home, the resurfaced photo taken years before her mugshot has added another layer of public interest to a case that has shocked people across the country.
