Idris Elba had one unusual request before filming an intimate scene with Kate Winslet and confirmed it himself on live TV.
When Kate Winslet and Idris Elba appeared on The Graham Norton Show to promote their 2017 survival drama The Mountain Between Us, Winslet revealed she had effectively taken charge of directing their intimate scenes, having more experience with them than either Elba or the film’s director.
But the detail that really got the audience going was something Elba had said to her just before they filmed.
Elba wanted Winslet to keep her socks on
Elba asked her to keep her socks on. Winslet was baffled, since everything else was coming off, so why the socks? His answer was short: he had a thing about feet.
Norton turned to Elba expecting a denial. Instead the actor shrugged and confirmed it entirely.
“I got a thing, you know. Just a thing.”
Winslet ran with it, joking that her feet were hardly the stuff of dreams, ‘enormous’, she said, and more Hobbit than Hollywood.
Elba immediately pushed back. “They’re all right, they’re all right,” he said, which somehow made the whole thing funnier.
Winslet made sure nobody in the audience misunderstood the nature of Elba’s preference.
“It’s the opposite, ladies and gentlemen,” she told them. “Idris loves feet.”
She then invited the entire studio audience to remove their shoes in his honor, to which they did not oblige.
