However, one popular four-letter boy’s name has now been proven to have confused people worldwide, and the name might surprise you.
A study by WordFinderX looked at thousands of names and checked how often people searched online to find out how they should be pronounced. To find the answer, WordFinderX turned to Forvo, a website that helps people learn how to pronounce words and names correctly.
The site features audio clips from native speakers, making it easier to hear how a name should sound.
WordFinderX then analyzed the data to identify the most frequently searched names. The names came from countries and cultures worldwide, with the final list ranked by how many times people had searched for help with their pronunciation.
So what was the four-letter boy name? It’s Sean. Yes, you read that right. Sean.
For many English speakers, the pronunciation is obvious: “Shawn.” But look at the spelling alone, and it is easy to see why people from other countries might have trouble figuring it out.
Most mispronounced names in the world, according to new study
Sean took first place, but it wasn’t the only name leaving people confused. The second most-searched name was Xuxa, a Basque name pronounced roughly “Shoo-shuh.” It had around 802,000 searches.
Next came Victoria, followed by Francisco and Plato. The study also looked at English names, and the results were surprising. Anne was the most-searched-for English name for pronunciation.
At first, that might seem strange. After all, Anne looks like a very simple name, right? But the way it is pronounced can change depending on where you are in the world.
In many English-speaking countries, it sounds like “Ann,” while in some European languages it can sound more like “Ann-uh.”
So, if you have ever looked at the name Sean and wondered, “How am I supposed to pronounce that?” it’s safe to say you are definitely not alone.
If not, it shows that what look like easy-to-pronounce names can be the ones that cause the most confusion.
