A woman standing behind President Donald Trump at a White House meeting has become the unexpected star of a viral video after viewers noticed a tiny hand movement at what they believe was a very telling moment.
Social media quickly gave the unidentified woman a nickname — “The Zapper” — as users jokingly speculated that she had somehow “zapped” Trump awake when he appeared to briefly nod off during the meeting.
But what actually happened?
The footage was recorded at the White House during a meeting in which Trump was listening to an expert discuss research into autism. As the speaker continued, Trump could be seen sitting in his chair with the woman standing directly behind him.
At one point, viewers thought the president appeared to close his eyes or briefly doze off. That’s when the mystery woman made the gesture that sent the internet into overdrive.
She had one hand near her stomach while the other hung at her side. As Trump appeared to close his eyes, the hand near her stomach moved slightly and seemed to clench.
That was all it took.
Social media users began joking that the woman had a hidden button that she pressed to wake the president — earning her the nickname “The Zapper.”
Of course, there is no evidence that any such device exists, and the viral theory appears to be nothing more than online speculation and humor.
Still, the clip quickly attracted plenty of attention.
One user, Tim Brannigan, presented the theory in mock-serious fashion:
“Claims she has a button fitted on her belly,” Brannigan wrote.
“And when she gets the nod that he’s asleep she moves her hand and presses a button that wakes him.
“They’re calling her The Zapper. No idea if it’s true but it appears to line up.”
Others weren’t buying the theory.
One person questioned why anyone would allegedly use such a device while standing directly in front of cameras, writing:
“If this were true they could easily pick someone not on camera.”
Trump’s supporters also offered a different interpretation of the footage, arguing that the president may not have been asleep at all.
One user defended him, writing:
“Looks like [Trump] is trying to listen intently since the person speaking is not in his line of sight and he is making sure that he understands everything that is being said.”
It has since emerged that the woman at the center of the viral video is not actually a mystery at all. “The Zapper” has been identified as Jayme Leagh Franklin, CEO of the conservative media and lifestyle brand The Conservateur and a former Trump administration staffer.
Franklin has not publicly addressed the social media attention surrounding her appearance or the “Zapper” nickname. However, she did post on X that she was “honored” to join President Trump in the Oval Office for the signing of the executive order.
In a statement to The Independent, Franklin explained:
“I was honored to join President Trump for the historic Executive Order signing focused on giving parents greater freedom to consult with their pediatricians and make the decisions they believe are best for their children.”
Franklin founded The Conservateur, a media and lifestyle brand aimed at young conservative Christian women, in November 2019.
Before launching the brand, she built a career in Republican politics and conservative media, according to her Aspen Ideas profile.
Her earlier experience included working at Fox News as an associate editor and administrative and production assistant. She has since returned to the network as a guest commentator.
Since the video went viral, Franklin has also addressed the speculation herself — and offered a much simpler explanation for the hand movement that sparked the “Zapper” theory.
During the White House ceremony, Franklin was standing behind Trump with one hand resting near her stomach. As viewers began joking that she was pressing a hidden button to “wake” the president, theories about her identity and the gesture spread rapidly across X.
Franklin appeared amused by the attention and responded to one of the posts, revealing the reason her hand was positioned where it was:
“I’m just pregnant.”
Her response quickly added another twist to the viral story, making clear that the gesture that sparked the internet’s elaborate “Zapper” theory had a far more ordinary explanation.
