Nick Reiner has formally been indicted for murdering his parents, famous director and actor Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Reiner. A shocking new development has emerged as another disturbing allegation has been added.
Nick Reiner, the son of Rob and Michele Reiner, has been indicted on two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of his parents.
The 32-year-old has pleaded not guilty. The indictment was returned by a Los Angeles County grand jury on July 20 and was unsealed on Wednesday, August 12.
It adds a disturbing new allegation to the case — that Nick allegedly “lay in wait” before his parents were killed.
The indictment states the crimes “involved great violence, great bodily harm, threat of great bodily harm, or other acts disclosing a high degree of cruelty, viciousness, or calousness.” It also called the victims “particularly vulnerable.”
“This was a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said.

Rob Reiner, best known for directing beloved movies including When Harry Met Sally… and The Princess Bride, and Michele Singer Reiner were found dead inside their Brentwood home on December 14, 2025.
Authorities have said both died from multiple sharp-force injuries. Nick was arrested hours after his parents were found and has remained behind bars without bail.
The new indictment also includes special circumstances involving multiple murders and the alleged use of a knife. These allegations could make Nick eligible for the death penalty if he is convicted, although prosecutors have not yet decided whether they will seek it.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman described the alleged killing of the couple as a “profound betrayal.”
Hearing in September
The case has sent shockwaves through Hollywood, where Rob Reiner was remembered as one of the industry’s most recognizable filmmakers and actors.
Despite the serious allegations, Nick Reiner remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. A grand jury indictment means the case can move forward to trial. Reiner is expected back in court for a pretrial hearing on September 15.
