Rising golf star dies at just 18 after unexpected emergency

What was supposed to be an exciting new chapter in a young athlete’s life has ended in unimaginable heartbreak.

Australian golfer Jessica Bang, a rising talent who was preparing to begin her rookie season as a professional, has died at just 18 years old after suffering a devastating brain hemorrhage while in Thailand.

Bang died at 7:20 a.m. local time Thursday, according to an update from her family on a GoFundMe campaign that had been established to help cover her medical care and bring her home to Australia.

Her death came less than two weeks after she suddenly collapsed in Bangkok while preparing for an important golf qualifying tournament.

The WPGA Tour of Australasia confirmed the teenager’s death and shared its condolences with her loved ones.

“The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the WPGA Tour of Australasia and the broader Australian golf community are with Jessica’s family, friends and all those who knew and loved her at this incredibly difficult time,” the organization said.

A sudden medical emergency

Bang had traveled to Thailand ahead of the KLPGA Tour’s International Qualifying Tournament, hoping to take another step forward in the professional career she had worked so hard to build.

Then, on Aug. 1, everything changed.

According to her cousins, Summer and Amelia, Bang suddenly collapsed and was rushed to Synphat Ramintra Hospital in Bangkok.

Doctors discovered that she had suffered a severe brain hemorrhage. She underwent emergency surgery and was later placed on life support in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

For her family, the days that followed were filled with fear and uncertainty.

They launched a fundraiser hoping to raise enough money to cover her mounting medical bills and arrange a specially equipped medical flight that could bring Jessica back to Australia, where she could be surrounded by the people who loved her.

The fundraiser received an overwhelming response, eventually bringing in nearly $38,000 Australian dollars.

But despite the desperate efforts of her family and the support of people around the world, Jessica could not be saved.

A daughter, cousin and young woman with so much ahead of her

For many parents, the story is especially heartbreaking because Jessica was only 18. She was at an age when so much of life was still ahead of her — new experiences, new dreams and a career she was only beginning to build.

Instead of celebrating her first full season as a professional golfer, her family is now grieving the loss of a daughter, cousin, friend and beloved young woman whose future was suddenly taken away.

Jessica had reportedly begun her professional career in 2025 and was already making an impression on the Australian golf scene. She had earned the nickname “Rookie Bang” and was considered a promising young player with plenty of potential.

One of her biggest early achievements came in February 2026, when she won the Ford Women’s NSW Regional Qualifying tournament at Moss Vale, New South Wales.

It was reportedly just her fifth professional start.

That victory offered a glimpse of what could have been.

Jessica was still learning, still competing and still chasing the dream of establishing herself among the professionals. Her trip to Thailand was meant to be another opportunity to move closer to that dream.

Instead, she suffered a medical emergency thousands of miles from home.

A family’s devastating goodbye

The fundraiser created by Jessica’s cousins captured the desperation her family faced as they tried to bring her home.

They had hoped she could return to Australia on a medical aircraft equipped with intensive-care equipment, giving her the chance to be surrounded by family and members of her community.

Thousands of dollars were raised as people rallied behind the young golfer and her loved ones. But now, instead of bringing Jessica home to recover, her family is bringing home a daughter they had every reason to believe would have many more years ahead of her.
