Shania Twain’s only son is now a musician and has inherited his mom’s striking features

For more than two decades, Shania Twain has fiercely protected the privacy of her only child, Eja D’Angelo Lange.

Born in 2001 to the country music superstar and legendary producer Robert “Mutt” Lange, Eja grew up surrounded by music — but largely away from the cameras.

Shania Twain welcomed her only child, Eja D’Angelo Lange, on Aug. 12, 2001, with her then-husband, music producer Robert “Mutt” Lange. From the moment he was born, Twain said motherhood completely changed her priorities.

“My priorities, of course, have changed. He’s my focus of every day,” Twain said of Eja, whose name is pronounced “Asia,” during a 2002 CBC interview. “He’s just brought so much more love into my life.”

Twain and Lange had moved to Switzerland, hoping the quieter surroundings would allow their son to grow up with a sense of normalcy despite his parents’ fame. Twain said she wanted Eja to develop strong values without feeling sheltered from the real world.

“I would like him to be well-rounded, humble and honest, without having to be deprived to develop that character,” she explained in 2007. “We go out of our way to try to keep him appreciative. We don’t keep him in a bubble.”

Eja’s childhood took a dramatic turn when his parents separated in 2008 after 14 years of marriage. The breakup came after Mutt Lange’s affair with Marie-Anne Thiébaud, a close friend of Shania’s.

The scandal took an even more unexpected turn when Twain revealed that she had fallen in love with Marie-Anne’s husband, Frédéric.

Suddenly, the country superstar was making headlines for a tangled exchange of partners rather than her music. Twain withdrew from the spotlight once again, struggling deeply in the aftermath of the painful breakup.

Known for keeping her private life away from the public eye, Twain eventually opened up about that difficult period in her 2011 memoir, From This Moment On. She revealed just how dark things became, admitting there were moments when she didn’t want to go on.

”There were days I didn’t really care if tomorrow came,” she told AARP in 2020.

Amid the heartbreak, Twain focused on giving her young son as stable and grounded a childhood as possible.

Shania has often spoken about how much motherhood meant to her during that difficult chapter. She once revealed that she would sometimes cry privately so Eja wouldn’t have to see the full weight of what she was going through.

When he eventually found her in tears, she explained that music could bring out powerful emotions—and the young boy simply hugged his mother before returning to what he was doing.

She also credited her new boyfriend, Frédéric, with helping her survive one of the darkest periods of her life, saying: ”Survival is everything. I was in quicksand. I panicked, like everybody does, but I didn’t surrender. I found a way out.”

Despite being raised by two Grammy-winning music figures, Eja never seemed interested in becoming a celebrity himself. Instead, he developed a passion for creating music behind the scenes, gravitating toward synthesizers, electronic music and production.

“He’s very musical,” Twain said of her son, explaining that he has a strong passion for making and arranging music.

”I’m not sure he’ll follow in my footsteps,” she added.

She has also described him as having a quiet confidence and said he appeared more interested in being a creator than a performer.

As a listener, Eja had a remarkably diverse taste in music. In 2017, Twain said he was especially drawn to EDM, while also exploring a wide range of other genres and artists. Hans Zimmer was among his biggest musical influences, and his interests extended well beyond simply listening — he was also creating, arranging and writing music of his own.

“He definitely listens to EDM, so that’s where he is as a fan, but he listens to all kinds of music. He likes a wide variety of stuff. Hans Zimmer is one of his biggest heroes. There’s a real broad spectrum in his life musically, so he makes all kinds of stuff and he orchestrates a lot of things. He loves to arrange music and write music. He’s just on his own journey.”

Fast-forward, and we can see that the mother and son have even had the chance to work together in the recording studio. Eja contributed to Twain’s 2023 album Queen of Me, and in 2026, Twain offered another rare glimpse of her grown-up son while sharing behind-the-scenes footage from her latest recording sessions.

In one clip, Eja could be seen working at a laptop in the studio, looking dramatically different from the little boy fans remember.

Twain captioned the moment, “Collaborating with my son,” giving fans an unusually intimate glimpse into their creative relationship.

But music isn’t the only thing that has kept the mother and son close. Twain has always emphasized raising Eja without spoiling him, drawing on her own difficult childhood. She once said she made a conscious effort not to give him everything he wanted, even joking that his birthday tradition was simply a homemade cake.

She also wanted him to grow up humble, independent and compassionate.

As Eja has gotten older, Twain has continued to respect his desire for privacy. Unlike many celebrity children, he has largely stayed away from the spotlight, with only occasional photos and glimpses shared by his famous mother.

And those rare appearances never fail to get fans talking.

In recent years, followers have been struck by how much the grown-up Eja resembles his mother, particularly his smile and distinctive chestnut-colored hair. One rare image prompted fans to marvel at just how quickly the little boy they remembered had grown into a young man.

Today, Eja appears to be quietly building a life and musical identity of his own. He may have inherited an extraordinary musical legacy from both of his parents, but Shania has always encouraged him to find his own sound rather than simply follow in her footsteps.

Eja has also inherited his mother’s love of animals. His dog, Luna, has occasionally appeared during Twain’s video interviews. During a 2021 appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan, Kelly Ripa reminded Twain that Luna had previously been seen in the background.

“That’s my son’s dog, yeah,” Twain explained, adding that she missed Eja now that he was living his own life. She jokingly said she had to get “another little baby” and introduced her own puppy, Camper.

Twain has also made a point of teaching her son about independence, empathy and respecting women. In a 2020 podcast interview, she said she wanted Eja to understand that women are capable of making their own decisions and supporting themselves.

“I think Eja has learned…that women are completely capable of their own independence,” she said.

She also emphasized that strength doesn’t mean always having to be the person who holds everything together.

“It’s good for sons to know that we’re human and we all need each other.”

That empathy was already visible when Eja was just a child. During a difficult period in Twain’s life, her young son once found her crying while listening to sad music. Rather than becoming frightened, he asked why she was upset.

Twain explained that music could bring out all kinds of emotions, including sadness. After hearing her explanation, Eja simply hugged his mother before returning to what he had been doing — a small moment that Twain clearly remembered years later.
