A simulation showing how cats see the world has gone viral.
A YouTube simulation has given millions of people a glimpse into how a cat sees the world and the results have left cat owners genuinely surprised.
YouTuber Benn Jordan created the simulation as part of a series exploring how different animals perceive the world around them, comparing the vision of cats and dogs side by side. The differences are striking.
How cats actually see the environment
While dogs perceive time at roughly 33 percent slower than humans, making our movements and voices appear slower and lower to them, cats experience the opposite. They process visual information significantly faster than both dogs and humans.
Cats see at around 100 frames per second, compared to the 30 to 60 frames per second most humans perceive. In practical terms this means the world moves more slowly from a cat’s perspective, giving them more time to react to fast-moving objects. This goes a long way toward explaining their extraordinary reflexes and their seemingly effortless ability to land on their feet.
“Cats don’t see in many more colors than dogs do but the sharpness in which they see is much superior to dogs and humans,” Jordan explained in the video. “Nonetheless, it makes it impressive that they can always land on their feet considering that they have less time to process it.”
Viewers are seriously impressed
The simulation has prompted a wave of comments from cat owners seeing their pets in a new light.
“You mean to tell me my cat is making these insane ninja moves in a faster timeline than I see them?” one person wrote. “That just made me respect cats even more.”
Another commenter admitted they had always assumed cats experienced time in slow motion, explaining their dexterity. “Interesting that I was completely wrong,” they said.
