The longtime feud between Robert De Niro and President Donald Trump has escalated once again.
Actor Robert De Niro has been very vocal about his criticism of Donald Trump and recently publicly blasted the president and his administration, calling the president “an idiot.”
During an appearance on Nicolle Wallace’s The Best People podcast, he said: “We gotta get rid of him. He’s gonna ruin the country. I don’t want everybody going around with their MAGA, the American flags, like they’re the only ones. We are Americans too,” according to VT.
De Niro criticizing Trump
While hosting a political event called the State of the Swamp, a reference to Trump’s State of the Union address earlier that day, De Niro said he had a sense of “betrayal” toward his country and argued that the U.S. needed to return to the principles he believed had made the country strong.
“It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it does need to return to the values that gave us our strength and humanity.
“If you want our leaders to be accountable, if you’re devoted to the constitution and the rule of law, if you want the United States of America to be worthy of your love, be ready to take to the streets together, and we will take our country back.”
Trump soon made it clear that he did not appreciate De Niro’s comments.
Called the actor “sick” and “demented”
The president took to Truth Social, where he first lashed out at Democratic Reps. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib over their behavior during the State of the Union, saying they were harmful to America and should be sent “back from where they came.”
“When you watch Low IQ Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, as they screamed uncontrollably last night at the very elegant State of the Union, such an important and beautiful event, they had the bulging, bloodshot eyes of crazy people, LUNATICS, mentally deranged and sick who, frankly, look like they should be institutionalised.
“When people can behave like that, and knowing that they are Crooked and Corrupt Politicians, so bad for our Country, we should send them back from where they came – as fast as possible.
“They can only damage the United States of America, they can do nothing to help it.”
That’s when Trump also turned his attention to De Niro, taking particular aim at the actor’s criticism of his administration.
The president suggested De Niro should leave the U.S. as well, writing: “They should actually get on a boat with Trump Deranged Robert De Niro, another sick and demented person with, I believe, an extremely Low IQ, who has absolutely no idea what he is doing or saying – some of which is seriously CRIMINAL!
“When I watched him break down in tears last night, much like a child would do, I realised that he may be even sicker than Crazy Rosie O’Donnell, who is right now in Ireland trying to figure out how to come back into our beautiful United States.”
A longtime feud
The back-and-forth has been going on for quite some time. During the event Rise Up, Sing Out: A Concert for the First Amendment, hosted by Jane Fonda, De Niro stressed his frustration with recent economic problems across the country. He shared his concerns about the cost of living and called out comments made by Trump.
“When I hear Trump say, as he did a few days ago, ‘I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation, not even a little bit,’ I say, ‘Shut the f*** up,’” De Niro said to the crowd, before leading them to repeat the phrase.
He also said: “I hate to say it, but loving our country is starting to sound like an abused spouse saying they love their abuser.
“I can’t love a country that starts stupid and inhumane wars, killing thousands of innocents and indirectly causing the deaths and suffering of millions more. I can’t love a country that takes healthcare away from millions of people and uses that money to enrich their pals in the Trump-Epstein class. I can’t love a country that sends out masked militias to shoot citizens in the streets, torture our neighbors, and separate families.”
He continued, “I can’t love a country that’s led by a racist, misogynist, xenophobic tyrant. And let me just say it: I can’t love the country that’s led by Donald Trump and his sycophant Congress.
“I want to love my country again,” De Niro said before closing the speech. “I want my country back.”
