Jeffrey Epstein’s final days in jail have long been surrounded by unanswered questions.
Now, records have shed new light on the woman who was reportedly the last person outside prison to speak with him — and she had also visited him behind bars just days earlier.
Epstein, 66, was arrested in July 2019 on federal sex-trafficking charges involving underage girls and was being held at Manhattan’s Metropolitan Correctional Center while awaiting trial. He was later found dead in his cell on August 10, 2019. His death was ruled a suicide, though it has remained the subject of intense public speculation.
According to prison records obtained by the Daily Mail, Karyna Shuliak, a Belarusian-born dentist who had been described as Epstein’s girlfriend, visited him at the MCC on July 30 — just 11 days before his death. She was reportedly the only personal visitor Epstein received during his incarceration; the other recorded visitors were lawyers.
The visit reportedly offered a glimpse into the nature of their relationship. A source described the couple, who were said to have been together for years, as being in a “very serious relationship.”
Shuliak had previously been identified as the woman Epstein spoke with by phone on August 9, the day before he died. According to a source, Epstein was so eager to speak with her that he asked his lawyers to leave the room.
“Everyone had to leave the room because he was so eager to get on the phone,” the source said.
They continued: “If he didn’t use the phone right then he would miss his window so the meeting ended abruptly and he went to use the phone and the lawyers all left.”
The contents of that final call have never been made public. However, reports at the time said Shuliak did not come away from the conversation believing Epstein was suicidal.
“When she hung up the phone she was not under the impression Epstein was suicidal,” a source said.
The following morning, prison guards found Epstein hanging in his cell during their routine checks.
Shuliak’s connection to Epstein reportedly stretched back several years. Photographs showed the pair together as early as 2014, and reports said their relationship continued despite Epstein’s involvement with multiple other women.
The Belarus native was believed to have arrived in the U.S. in 2009 and later worked as a dentist. Reports also claimed Epstein helped pay for her mother’s medical treatment and may have assisted with her family’s living expenses.
She was reportedly seen with Epstein and members of his inner circle on multiple occasions, including visits to his New York mansion. Public records also linked her to properties associated with Epstein.
The prison records identifying her July 30 visit were released through a Freedom of Information Act request involving thousands of pages of documents related to Epstein’s time in federal custody.
While investigators ultimately concluded that Epstein died by suicide, his death has continued to fuel speculation and conspiracy theories.
