King Harald of Norway passed away last week at age 89. Now, President Trump has broken his silence.
Norway was left heartbroken on Friday as King Harald V passed away at the age of 89. The beloved monarch died peacefully at 6:35 a.m. local time at the National Hospital in Oslo.
He had been hospitalized the previous week for treatment for a rare blood condition. The Norwegian Royal Palace confirmed the sad news, bringing an end to the life and reign of one of Norway’s most beloved kings.
Donald Trump breaks silence on King Harald’s passing
Flags around the country were lowered to half-mast and church bells rang out.
“An era has ended. A new one begins. The king is dead. Long live the king,” the prime minister, Jonas Gahr Store, said.
He has now been succeeded by his son, Crown Prince Haakon, 53, who has now become King Haakon VIII. Since the news broke, tributes have poured in from royals and world leaders around the globe.
Now, U.S President Donald Trump has also shared his thoughts on the monarch. Trump paid tribute to King Harald in a post on Truth Social, describing him as a “strong, proud, and greatly respected man.”
He also highlighted the late king’s love for his country — and the deep respect he had from the Norwegian people.
“Very sad to hear about the passing of King Harald of Norway — A strong, proud, and greatly respected man. He loved his Country, and was truly loved and respected by his people. Our hearts are with the Royal Family, and all of Norway, during this difficult time. A truly BIG loss!”
Swedish King Carl Gustaf also paid tribute
Trump was far from the only royal figure to pay tribute to Norway’s late king. Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf also shared a heartfelt message following Harald’s death.
He remembered King Harald as an outstanding representative of Norway, both as head of state and as a successful athlete. He also spoke warmly about their personal friendship, saying Harald had been a good friend to him, his family and Sweden for many years.
King Carl Gustaf also sent his deepest condolences to Queen Sonja and the rest of the Norwegian royal family as they mourn the loss of a beloved husband, father and grandfather.
