Donald Trump has put his face on something most Americans are used to seeing in their pockets. The president’s portrait has now appeared on a new $1 US coin. However, one detail has left social media mocking the president.
Donald Trump has made another striking call in his effort to leave his personal mark on American institutions. On Wednesday, the new $1 coin was launched by the US Mint as part of celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary.
Trump’s portrait appears on the front, alongside the words “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” However, in its planning stage, it was met with rage.
Ever since it was announced in October last year, many Democrats have attempted to block it from becoming reality.
In December, U.S. Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) introduced the Change Corruption Act to prevent any living or sitting U.S. President from being featured on any U.S. currency.
“While monarchs put their faces on coins, America has never had and never will have a king,” Senator Cortez Masto said at the time. “Our legislation would codify this country’s long-standing tradition of not putting living Presidents on American coins. Congress must pass it without delay.”
Trump’s new $1 coin sparks reactions
“President Trump’s self-celebrating maneuvers are authoritarian actions worthy of dictators like North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, not the United States of America,” Senator Merkley added.
“We must reject his efforts to dismantle our ‘We, The People’ republic and replace it with a strongman state by demanding strong accountability to prevent further abuse of taxpayer dollars. As we look ahead to America’s 250th birthday, I’ll keep fighting back against Trump’s corruption and partisan propaganda.”

While some have shown their anger towards the coin, it seems it was popular among others. Within hours of going on sale, rolls of the coins were listed as “not currently in stock” on the Mint’s website.
A roll of 25 coins was priced at $61, while a bag containing 100 coins cost $154.50. The coins were also available through vending machines at the US Mint store in Washington, DC.
The US Mint has said the coins are not being released into general circulation, although they can still be used to pay. It’s safe to say that the coin has stirred up many emotions, not least because of one unusual but crucial design detail.
People claim ‘liberty ends in 2026’ as detail in new Trump coin is mocked
U.S law generally prohibits a living president from appearing on American currency. However, special legislation tied to the country’s 250th anniversary included a design provision that allowed the Mint to proceed with the Trump coin.
The Mint described it as a special design created to mark a “historic national milestone.” It called the coin a once-in-a-generation anniversary design that could become a standout item for collectors.

Below, the dates show 1776 and 2026, and to the side, it states: “In God We Trust.” After its release, social media users have mocked it, as they claim Trump has killed the nation’s liberty since it shows liberty ends in 2026,
“I like that this design appears to show the birth date of liberty as 1776, and its death as 2026,” The Bulwark’s economics editor Catherine Rampell wrote.
On X, others joined in.
“I guess we all knew it”
“liberty died 2026? weird to admit but i guess we all knew it,” one person wrote.
“It certainly does feel like liberty is dead in 2026. You even added a portrait of the guy who killed it. Poignant. Either that or it’s Clavicular’s dad. Hard to tell,” a second added.
A third person showed their anger towards the coin even being released, writing, “I’m slapping anyone who hands me a Donald Trump dollar coin.”
