A heated fight has erupted over President Donald Trump’s account of where he was after the September 11 attacks. After Trump claimed he was dragged from danger by two firefighters, California Governor Gavin Newsom is now accusing Trump of telling what he calls an “absolutely disgusting” lie.
The controversy began after Trump spoke at an event honoring the first responders who lost their lives on 9/11. Speaking on Tuesday, Trump claimed that two firefighters found him on the ground near the U.S. Steel Building, close to Ground Zero.
During the speech, Trump described being near the U.S. Steel Building, just a short distance from Ground Zero.
“I’ll never forget two firemen; we thought it was coming down on top of us, and two firemen, big, strong guys. And I’m not the smallest guy in the world. They grabbed me under the arm, said, ‘Got to get out of here,’” Trump said. He didn’t specify exactly when the incident occurred.
“They literally lifted me up. This is not easy to do. I’m big. They lifted me up, and they started running with me. I said, ‘Fellas, I can run myself.’ But they were amazing. But they thought it was coming down,” he continued.
Trump claimed he was ‘dragged off’ by firefighters near Ground Zero on 9/11
Trump claimed he was “down there right after this happened.” However, later on Truth Social, the president said he was not at the World Trade Center “on the same day as the collapse, but shortly thereafter.”
“Everything I said was exactly accurate,” he said of his 9/11 comments while sharing a TV news clip of him speaking after the attacks.
On the day of the 9/11 attack, Trump said he watched it from his window. This raises questions about his later claim that he was at the U.S. Steel Building.
Trump did visit the area in the days after the attacks, where he spoke to reporters and called for a quick and proportionate response to the terrorist attack.

He also famously claimed he sent hundreds of workers to Ground Zero the next day to help with rescue and recovery efforts. However, that claim has never been independently confirmed.

One of them is California Governor Gavin Newsom. On X, his press office wrote, “An absolutely disgusting thing to lie about.”
Journalist Ron Filipkowski described Trump’s story about the firefighters as yet another example of what he’s called “stolen valor.”
“I know he’s lied about his non-role in 9/11 rescue and recovery before, but never this level of detail,” he wrote on X.
“Trump could have made the ceremony with 9/11 first responders today about the many heroes who died attempting to rescue people and others who risked their lives and long-term health. But instead, he created a fictitious event featuring himself, who did nothing, as the hero of 9/11.”
