Judge Judy has been a regular on television worldwide for almost 30 years. But now, the 83-year-old is calling it quits in front of the camera – and she has a clear reason why.
Not many would probably recognize the name Judy Sheindlin. But say “Judge Judy,” and almost everyone knows exactly who you mean.
The sharp-tongued judge became a household name when her hit courtroom show premiered 30 years ago. Viewers couldn’t get enough of her quick comebacks, no-nonsense attitude, and hilarious reactions to the often bizarre people who appeared in her courtroom.
After decades on the air, Judge Judy ended when CBS canceled the show in 2020. Still, no one can deny it was an incredible success. Judy appeared in more than 6,500 episodes and handled 12,500 cases, averaging 9 million viewers a day. She also won three Emmys.
But at the time, Judy Sheindlin was far from ready to leave television behind. She has continued her career, most recently in her Prime Video series Judy Justice. The American arbitration-based reality court show has been on for four seasons. However, this fall, Judy Sheindlin’s on-screen television career could be over for good.
Speaking with People Magazine, the 83-year-old reveals that after the show ends in October, she will work behind the camera instead.
“I have a lot of other things of interest,” the TV star said. “I don’t want to do hair and makeup anymore, but I still want my message to get out there.”
At the time, Sheindlin is developing Judyverse, an adult animated series based on the viral AI “Baby Judge Judy” videos. Meanwhile, spending time with her family is also a big priority.
Judy will remain active behind the scenes as an executive producer. Moreover, she is producing a courtroom show that premieres September 14, almost exactly 30 years after Judge Judy first took the screen. The show will feature her son. Adam Levy.
“There aren’t a lot of people who can carry a half hour on their own unscripted. He has what it takes,” Judy Sheindlin said.
