On September 12, Ritchson and Catherine announced their separation in a joint Instagram statement.
“After twenty years together, Cat and I have decided to end our marriage and continue alongside one another differently,” they wrote.
The couple said they had grown up together, built a family and shared two decades of life. The couple share three sons together, Calem, Edan, and Amory. They emphasized that the three of them would remain their priority.
“Nothing can diminish what these years have meant to us or the love and respect we will always share,” they stated.
Rather than describing the separation as the end of their relationship altogether, the pair said they hoped to remain friends and become the strongest co-parents possible.
“The best gift we can give one another — and our boys — right now is friendship, grace and a commitment to becoming the strongest co-parents we can be,” they wrote.
They also had a message for everyone watching from the outside, “Change is hard enough without the whole world weighing in.”
The couple asked for privacy and compassion as they navigate the transition.
The Split Apparently Followed Months Of Private Changes
According to TMZ, court documents reportedly show that the actor filed for divorce in December 2025.
The documents also reportedly indicate that the couple reconciled in March 2026 before eventually announcing their separation in September.
That timeline suggests their decision came after an extended period of trying to work through their relationship rather than being a sudden announcement.
Ritchson and Catherine first met as teenagers.
In a 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Hollywood actor recalled being nervous about approaching her because he initially thought she was older than him.
“I thought she was a college student, so I was afraid to talk to her,” he said.
The two eventually discovered they were around the same age, worked together on a play that summer and began dating.
“I was madly in love,” Ritchson recalled.
They married on May 12, 2006.
