Authorities in Brazil have arrested a suspected serial killer who reportedly confessed to the murders of 80 people after police caught him in disguise as a woman.
Jorlan Lopes da Silva, 33, was arrested on Sunday, September 13, in a joint operation between the Civil Police of Paraiba and the region’s military police.
According to Brazilian outlet Correio Braziliense, attempts were made to apprehend da Silva 20 days earlier. During the latest attempt, police found the man dressed as a woman, carrying a toddler who was not his.
Da Silva had attempted to disguise himself as a woman in a bid to evade capture, donning a wig, dress, sandals, and sunglasses, as well as painting his fingernails.
The internet, unsurprisingly, had much to say about da Silva’s disguise when a video of his arrest was uploaded to X.
“One of the worst disguises since Chad Powers,” one X user wrote.
Another added: “They’ll try to make him go to rehab, he’ll say ‘no no no'” – a reference to late singer Amy Winehouse.
“Hail Mary… man dressed as a woman,” a third wrote.
“He didn’t try very hard to disguise himself….” opined a fourth.
Reports claim that the 33-year-old is suspected of having killed at least 16 people over the course of three months. Following his arrest, however, da Silva claimed he had murdered up to 80 people across the past two decades.
“During his interrogation, with great composure, Jorlan confessed to several homicide crimes, even revealing that he committed his first crime when he was 13 years old,” the police said in a statement.
The 30-hour operation to catch da Silva saw police establish a tight perimeter and use it to effectively trap him.
Police are said to have found at least one body based on information da Silva has given them thus far, while investigators are following a number of other leads as they try to decipher what is fact and what is potentially fiction.
