Mother of conjoined twins given just 24 hours to live reveals why she refused to separate them

When conjoined twins Callie and Carter Torres were born in 2017, doctors feared they might not survive for more than 24 hours. However, separating them was never an option. Now, their mother has opened up about the difficult decision.

Callie and Carter Torres were born conjoined twins. They are joined at the chest and abdomen and share parts of their body.

Doctors and surgeons discussed the possibility of separating them shortly after they were born. But just three days after they arrived in the world, doctors told the mother, Chelsea, that the girls should not be separated.

“They said, ‘do not separate the girls,'” Chelsea recalled in an interview with This Morning.

Callie and Carter defied all odds and survived. But when the girls were about three years old, their parents faced the same decision again.

Chelsea said they ultimately decided to let the sisters make that choice themselves when they were old enough to understand the risks involved.

“We decided to ultimately give them the option whenever they became older and understood the risks and the surgery.”

Today, the nine-year-olds have learned to move through life together. Even walking was a major challenge at first because they share legs.

Chelsea explained that the girls had to learn how to coordinate their movements, describing their early attempts as if they were “picking up one leg and floating in the air.”

“It was really hard,” she said.

But the sisters eventually mastered it and showed that anything is possible. The girls have developed their own personalities and interests. They enjoy drawing, making crafts, and playing Roblox together.

But of course, some things are trickier. For example, when they disagree. So how do they do it? Chelsea explained that Callie and Carter have learned to talk things out. However, one way to settle things is rock, paper, scissors.

Nervous about the future

So what does the future hold for the conjoined twins? Their mother admitted she is nervous about what is to come, including their teenage years and dating.

But for now, Callie and Carter continue to defy the odds doctors gave them at birth. They have already come much further than anyone expected, and we’re sure they’ll keep inspiring others with their story.
