Emmanuel Banuelos chose an oceanfront spot at Laguna Beach, arranged white flowers, hired a photographer, and even organized a mariachi band because he knew how much Hayley loved the music.
But moments before the proposal, the romantic setup turned into an ugly confrontation.
A woman reportedly approached members of the crew and demanded that they leave the area, claiming the spot was reserved for local residents.
Then, after seeing the couple and hearing the mariachi music, the encounter allegedly took a much more disturbing turn.
The Proposal Was Supposed To Be A Surprise
Hayley’s younger sister, Trinity Lugo, was responsible for filming the proposal.
She was hiding nearby as Emmanuel and Hayley made their way toward the carefully decorated location.
According to the couple and their crew, a woman walking her dog approached Trinity and objected to the setup.
The woman reportedly complained that she was tired of the location being busy “every single f***ing weekend”** and argued that the area was meant for residents.
The crew tried to keep things calm.
They reportedly told her they would be leaving soon and asked her not to interfere with the surprise.
But then the mariachi band began playing.
And the woman allegedly realized the proposal was for a Mexican-American couple.
The Woman Allegedly Told Them To “Go Back To Mexico”
In video of the confrontation, the woman can reportedly be heard making an ethnically charged remark before saying:
“This isn’t Mexico, you motherf***ers. Go back to Mexico.”
The confrontation quickly went viral online, with viewers accusing the woman of racism and criticizing the way she allegedly spoke to the couple.
For Hayley, however, the incident was about more than what happened during her own proposal.
“It hurts a lot because it’s not just us there,” she said in media interviews.
“She’s being mean to the whole Mexican culture, the whole Hispanic culture.”
“Everyone’s felt it,” she added.
Emmanuel Had Chosen The Location And Music For A Reason
The proposal had been carefully planned long before the confrontation.
Emmanuel said he chose the oceanfront location because he wanted the moment to be beautiful and memorable.
The mariachi band was especially meaningful because of Hayley’s love for the music.
“She, in fact, loves mariachi, so I really wanted it there,” he explained.
After all the planning, he ultimately refused to let the confrontation take away the moment.
And despite everything that happened, he still got down on one knee.
Pictures shared by Trinity Films show Emmanuel proposing to Hayley with a ring box in his hand.
One caption accompanying the photos summed up the couple’s attitude:
“Love is always going to win over hate.”
The Couple Got Engaged Anyway
Hayley has said that she hopes the incident encourages people to think about the way they treat others.
“You can’t be doing this anymore,” she said. “Like, it’s not right.”
For the couple, the proposal ultimately became about something much bigger than the original plan. What was supposed to be a private romantic memory became a viral conversation about racism, cultural identity, and who gets to feel welcome in public spaces.
The Internet Quickly Took Sides
The video prompted a wave of reactions online.
“A proposal with mariachi isn’t ruining anyone’s picnic—her reaction was far more disruptive than the music,” one person wrote. Another added, “Girl… it’s mariachi music, not a declaration of war.”
Seems like a lot of people had opinions about the viral video. Share this with others to see what they think of the situation.
