A woman has spoken out after an unusual earring trick she used on a Delta Air Lines flight went viral on social media. She used an earring trick to stop a man from invading her space, but the internet is divided over who was in the wrong.
Kadia Tubman found herself at the center of an online debate after a fellow passenger accused her of being “very passive-aggressive” for placing an earring on her sleeve, with the pin sticking out toward the person sitting next to her.
The photo began circulating on X on October 16 and was shared without her consent. In the image, Kadia appears calm but visibly fed up, with the earring pin clearly sticking out from the right sleeve of her bright blue sweater.
The woman used her earring to keep a fellow passenger, identified as Otto, out of her personal space on the Delta flight. However, the man described her as “passive-aggressive” in an X post and questioned whether her actions were “legal.”
“Met a very passive aggressive passenger on @delta today. Immediately angry about my using the armrest before takeoff. She installed an earring on her sleeve to poke me. I didn’t mind till the turbulence when it stabbed me,” he wrote.
He continued, “I calmly asked her to remove it, she wouldn’t, and told me I was taking up too much of my seat cause I’m a man. This legal? Also, how do people get like this?”
Later, in a follow-up post, Otto claimed he notified the flight attendant when landing, who “did not tell the woman to remove the earring,” but instead asked him to wait at the gate.
Woman breaks silence after using earring trick to stop a man invading her space
“I had to get to work and did not want to wait around with the passive aggressor,’ he wrote, joking that he was “very impressed” with the woman’s “solution” at first. But that changed when she, according to him, began poking him with it.
Kadia Tubman broke her silence on October 18, sharing her side of the story in an Instagram post named “10 facts from that flight.” Alongside an airport selfie, she explained that when she first arrived at her seat, Otto’s laptop was resting on the armrest between them.
“I let it be because he was working. When I settled into the aisle seat I leaned against the arm rest but didn’t put my arm on it because he was all over it,” Kadia wrote. “He took up more space, past the arm rest boundary.”
Tubman claimed Otto repeatedly rubbed against her arm and lifted the armrest, waking her up during the flight.
“I politely told him and demonstrated how his arm was hitting me. He said there was no space,” she explained.

She said she understood the situation and initially allowed him to use the entire armrest while he worked. However, Kadia claimed he later moved back into her space, forcing her to speak up again.
Sparks heated debate
Tubman added that she eventually fell asleep, only to be woken again when his arm touched hers. At that point, she decided to take off her earring and attach it to her sleeve.
“He would’ve had to be so close to me to be poked,” she pointed out. “Like come on now.”
According to Tubman, Otto became angry after being poked and called the earring a “weapon,” even threatening to “get his lawyer involved.”
“He demanded I remove my earring. When I refused, he asked if it was necessary and I said, ‘Yes, clearly because you finally stopped touching me,'” she wrote.
Tubman claimed Otto then called over a flight attendant, but she disputed his account.
“He ignored my explanation and called the flight attendant,” she wrote, adding that Otto had moved into a different position between his seat and the window.

She claimed he then told the flight attendant that she had been “leaning over in the seat and stabbing him during turbulence.” Kadia said she immediately challenged his account.
“I looked that woman in her eyes and said, ‘He’s not telling the truth and I would be happy to speak with him and the captain or staff at the gate.’ She agreed we’d wait to get to the gate,” she wrote.
“She needs to go to jail”
Kadia Tubman added that she got off the plane first and waited for Otto, but he walked past her without responding when she tried to get his attention. She eventually waited for the captain before leaving.
While some called Tubman “next level insane” for her move, others praised her idea as genius.
“Her arm is in her lap. If the earring poked you, then you’re definitely stretched into her space and are in the wrong,” one person commented on Otto’s post, the Daily Mail reported.
“If you were close enough to be poked by that earring, then you’re the problem lol,” another wrote.
A third person claimed, “She is clearly well within her seat. You had to have been spilling over into hers if that was poking you. I wouldn’t like it either. I don’t want to touch you. The earring is a bit much, but she has a point.”
However, not everyone supported Tubman’s actions.
“That is not a nice person. I’m sure it’s skirting the line of legality since she did it with the intent to harm, where a simple conversation would suffice,” one argued, while a fifth stated, “She needs to go to jail. This is not okay.”
Who is in the right and who is in the wrong has sparked a heated debate online, as social media users are divided over who was at fault.
