After her humiliating five-day stint as White House press secretary, Katie Zacharia is encouraging fans to dress up as her for Halloween – but she refuses to treat them with the secret trick behind her signature look.
Katie Zacharia, a mother of four and political commentator, landed one of the most high-profile jobs in Washington when President Donald Trump appointed her to replace Karoline Leavitt in October. But her time in the spotlight quickly turned into a public embarrassment.
Just one day after taking the position, Zacharia faced a wave of criticism over her first White House press briefing, with viewers questioning her performance during the 15-minute appearance.
By Oct.16, just five days into the job, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung confirmed that she would be “transitioning into a new role that will be announced at a later date,” according to the New York Times.
‘Former press secretary’ costume
Her abrupt departure fueled a wave of online jokes, but rather than shy away from the ridicule, Zacharia decided to have some fun with it as Halloween approached.
According to The Mirror US, she shared an Instagram Story from a seasonal pop-up shop, joking that the costume retailer had failed to stock outfits inspired by her brief White House career.
She said she was “very disappointed” that the store didn’t have “former press secretary” or “Chinese lawyer” costumes, adding, “Guess I’m gonna have to wear the OG outfit on Halloween.”
‘Chinese lawyer’
The joke was accompanied by a meme featuring her photograph on a “Chinese lawyer” costume, referencing another controversy that followed her appointment.
After graduating from Pepperdine Caruso School of Law, Zacharia worked at Beijing’s Zhong Lun Law Firm from 2011 to 2013. However, questions about her credentials surfaced after Donald Trump introduced her as an attorney.
The State Bar of California confirmed it had no record of her being licensed in the state, while Zacharia later acknowledged that she had failed the bar exam and never retaken it.
As jokes about her brief White House career continued circulating online, Zacharia’s appearance also became inspiration for Halloween costumes, prompting questions about how she felt about people dressing up as her.
Her tricks remain a secret
During an Oct. 27 Newsmax interview, Zacharia was asked about the costumes and the online attention surrounding her appearance, including speculation that her long blonde hair was fake.
“I have never used extensions,” she insisted. “This is my real hair. There was a lot of dragging me online. I’ve never actually dyed my hair.”
“I do have a trick to keeping it blonde, but it’s not dye, so you can’t find it in a box,” she added without revealing her secret.
And despite the jokes at her expense, Zacharia made it clear she was enjoying the Halloween attention.
“I hope you do dress up as me because it’s absolutely hilarious,” she said.
