A man who spent 18 months injecting his own semen into his arm in an attempt to relieve back pain ended up in the hospital with a series of medical complications.
The unusual case has prompted a doctor to warn against dangerous home remedies, particularly when people are struggling with persistent pain and turn to experimental treatments instead of seeking professional help.
The Irishman reportedly continued the practice for a year and a half before experiencing severe lower back pain that required medical attention.
During his hospital visit, doctors discovered that his arm had become red and swollen. An X-ray revealed a buildup of semen in the muscle at the site where he had repeatedly injected himself.
The man was diagnosed with subcutaneous emphysema, a rare condition in which air becomes trapped beneath the skin, causing swelling.
Although he initially sought treatment for his back pain, his arm also required medical attention. However, according to reports, he discharged himself from the hospital before receiving treatment for the arm.
Doctor warns against dangerous home remedies
The case caught the attention of Dr. Asim Cheema, an Internal Medicine and Cardiology Specialist at Your Doctors Online, who discussed the incident with UNILAD.
Cheema warned that the case illustrates the dangers of attempting to treat medical problems with unverified remedies, particularly when someone is dealing with chronic pain.
“This is a deeply concerning example of how misinformation and desperation can drive individuals to take extreme, dangerous measures to manage chronic pain.
“Injecting non-sterile bodily fluids like semen, particularly without medical supervision, is not only ineffective but also poses serious health risks. Complications can include infection, inflammation, embolism, and subcutaneous emphysema, as seen in this case.
“This behaviour borders on self-harm and highlights a wider issue – people with chronic conditions increasingly turning to unverified, anecdotal remedies online instead of seeking evidence-based medical care.”
The doctor described the incident as a warning about the dangers of self-experimentation and stressed the importance of educating people about treatments that have been proven safe and effective.
“Medical issues should be handled under the guidance of trained professionals, not improvised with online myths or homebrew remedies,” Dr. Cheema concluded.
When to seek help
Rather than experimenting with potentially harmful treatments, people experiencing persistent back pain should seek advice from a qualified medical professional.
According to the recommendations provided by Cheema, several approaches can help manage back pain, depending on its cause and severity.
The man’s case serves as a reminder that even when pain is difficult to manage, attempting an unconventional treatment without medical guidance can introduce additional health risks.
Anyone experiencing persistent or severe back pain should seek appropriate medical advice rather than relying on unverified remedies.
