California Gov. Gavin Newsom has delivered a savage response after Nicki Minaj’s name was floated as Donald Trump’s next White House press secretary, escalating his bitter feud with the rapper.
With the November midterm elections approaching, President Donald Trump has been recruiting celebrity heavyweights to energize supporters on the campaign trail, including one of his most outspoken musical allies, Nicki Minaj.
The 43-year-old rapper joined Trump at a Michigan rally on Oct. 25, where the president praised her appearance in a way that quickly attracted attention.
Trump described Minaj as having “one hell of a beautiful a**,” prompting Newsom’s press office to fire back on X.
“An unlikely match. Then again, it all Depends,” the post said.
‘Oh Gavvy pooh’
The jab was hardly surprising given the history between Minaj and the Democratic governor, who have traded insults as the Trinidadian rapper has grown increasingly vocal about her support for Trump.
“Oh Gavvy pooh, it only gets worse from here for you, buddy,” Minaj captioned a post on X in December 2025, alongside an image of Chucky, the knife-wielding horror doll. “It’s the end of the road for you, my love.”
And while her feud with Newsom has grown increasingly hostile, Minaj’s relationship with Trump has only strengthened, even joining him aboard Air Force One on the way to his Michigan campaign appearance.
‘New White House Press Secretary!’
During the flight, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung sat down with the rapper for a chat that soon sparked speculation about an unexpected career change.
Cheung asked Minaj about Trump’s handling of the economy, giving her an opportunity to explain why she believes his business experience makes him an effective president.
“Well, we have a president who understands economics first of all,” said Minaj, who calls herself Trump’s “No. 1 fan.” “If he can do that himself, with his own finances, surely he knows what to do with the country.”
Her praise extended to foreign policy, with Minaj declaring, “He’s tough internationally. He tells them what we need, not what they need.”
Cheung apparently liked her answers enough to float a surprising suggestion, sharing the video on X with the caption, “Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have found the new White House Press Secretary!”
The suggestion followed a shake-up in Trump’s communications team, with Karoline Leavitt leaving the position in August and her successor, Katie Zacharia, departing in October after just five days.
Biting response from Newsom
Minaj offered no indication that she was seriously considering the job, responding to Cheung’s post with an American flag and a laughing, sweating emoji.
But the prospect of the rapper standing behind the White House briefing room podium was apparently too tempting for Newsom’s office to ignore.
Responding to reports that Minaj was being floated for the position, the governor’s press office delivered its sarcastic four-word verdict on X.
“We can only pray,” the post said.
