French travel vlogger Emma Marie Laurent was on a trip in Nicaragua when the pickup truck she was traveling in was swept away by a river. Laurent and two other women died. The driver was the only survivor.
Emma Marie Laurent, 24, was traveling in northern Nicaragua together with Swiss national Noe Luscher, 20, and Karen Lopez Montano, who worked at a hotel in the country. Early on October 9, heavy rain had made the Nahualapa river swift and dangerous.
The pickup truck ran into trouble when the driver attempted to cross the river. The water carried the vehicle away, and the three women died, reported the Nicaraguan newspaper La Prensa.
Nicaragua’s co-president Rosario Murillo commented on the accident and warned about how quickly an apparently calm river can become dangerous: “Rivers are deceptive. You think they are calm and suddenly the current comes and we have tragedies like this.”
Shared her travels with thousands of followers
Just one week before the accident, Laurent published a post from Portugal in which she wrote about her view of life.
“I think the most beautiful people, inside and out, are those who know how to admire the world around them,” she wrote in French, according to New York Post.
Laurent had around 43,000 followers on social media and documented her travels and adventures living the van life in Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean. She described herself as someone who lived between two suitcases.
On September 26, she posted a video of herself waking up in a van. In the caption she wrote that the goal in life is to find someone who prefers it over a five-star hotel.
