In the days surrounding Christmas, a heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in Lincolnshire, England.
Two-year-old Bronson Battersby lost his life after his father suddenly died, leaving the toddler alone in their home without food or water.
It would be more than a week before their bodies were discovered.
And when rescuers finally entered the property, they were met with a truly heartbreaking sight.
Suffered a heart attack
Two years ago, the small seaside town of Skegness, England, was rocked by a heartbreaking tragedy when a two-year-old boy and his father were found dead inside their home.
Bronson Battersby, 2, had been alone for days after his father, Kenneth, suffered a fatal heart attack the day after Christmas. The toddler was unable to get food or water, and ultimately died from dehydration and starvation, according to BBC.
Their bodies were eventually discovered on January 9, 2024, after a social worker gained access to the home with the help of the landlord.

When Bronson’s sister learned how the two had been found, there was one small detail that brought her a little comfort amid the unimaginable heartbreak.
Speaking to BBC Breakfast, the sister said she had been told that the two had been found looking peaceful. The toddler was found curled up at his father’s legs.
”I was told that they were both found looking very peaceful,” she said.
Severely malnourished
”That is the only consolation I can take. That my little brother snuggled up to my dad. He didn’t look in pain. Neither of them did. And they were together.”
At the start of the inquest in June 2024, coroner Paul Smith was told that Bronson had died from dehydration and appeared to be severely malnourished.
The sister, who lives in Sheffield, said she last saw Bronson during a family trip to and remembered him as a ”beautiful, sweet-natured little boy.”

@Every time I saw him he was happy, he was smiling, he learned to walk, he was learning to speak,” she recalled. ”We’re devastated as a whole family.”
She also spoke lovingly about her father, describing him as ”born to be wild” and ”not an angel,” but stressing that he ”really, really loved his children.”
”I know how proud he was of every single one of us,” she said. ”He absolutely doted on [Bronson]. I think he loved doing what he was doing for him.”
A family friend also remembered the little boy’s love of cartoons, particularly “Cocomelon,” as well as nursery rhymes and playing on his drum kit.
Neighbor ‘pretty sure’ she heard him crying
The heartbreaking case has also prompted serious questions about whether the tragedy could have been prevented and whether more could have been done to save Bronson.
Kenneth was unemployed and had been living with a heart condition. In the months before his death, he had also developed severe jaundice.
Bronson had been classified as a vulnerable child by social services, which meant a social worker was supposed to visit the family every week.
A social worker had tried to visit the family home on January 2 and again on January 4, but received no answer.
A neighbor later said she was “pretty sure” she could hear Bronson crying through the walls of her apartment late on New Year’s Eve.

Authorities were contacted, and inquiries were made at other addresses where Bronson might have been staying. Five days later, on January 9, the social worker returned and was eventually allowed inside by the landlord.
That was when the bodies were discovered.
Bronson’s mother was left heartbroken as she recalled the moment she went to identify her little boy. She said she was unable to hold him because his body had become too fragile.
“I couldn’t pick him up because his body was too fragile,” she said through tears. “I could only touch him. He had been left there too long.”
Despite the unanswered questions, Bronson’s sister said she did not blame the social workers or the police.
“I don’t place any blame at all on them. I believe that social services and the police did what they could within the powers that they had and the information that they were given,” she said.
She also welcomed the decision to investigate whether there had been any failings or missed opportunities. An inquest into the deaths is now scheduled to begin on February 22, 2027, with a four-week jury hearing planned.
