How to create an endless supply of blueberries at home with 5 easy steps

Besides tasting divine, blueberries also have many health benefits. They contain antioxidants that have been shown to lower both blood pressure and cholesterol levels, as well as to promote brain functionality and stem off memory loss. And not only that—the antioxidants in blueberries also combat aging and cancer!

Wild blueberries are a delicious, nutritious treasure given to us by our forests. But if you’re like me, you don’t always have the energy to go out into the woods to pick them and freeze them. And store-bought berries are never quite as good.

So growing your own is the best thing that’s happened to us blueberry lovers, like ever. It enables blueberry fans to grow our own blueberries at home in the backyard or on the balcony.

Creating an infinite supply of blueberries isn’t that difficult. All you need to do is follow these five steps:

Find the right place

Blueberry bushes need good soil and plenty of sunlight. If you have a large yard, growing them in raised planters is perfect because excess water will drain away through the soil. And if you decide to grow them on the balcony, it’s good to invest in a container.

Make sure you have enough space

If you’re planting more than one bush, leave a 5-ft (150cm) gap between them.

Plant them in the spring

The best time to plant blueberry bushes is in the spring. Plant trees that are one to four years old in holes 20 inches deep and 18 inches wide (50cm x 45cm). Make sure to give them plenty of water.

Keep your blueberry bushes weed-free

The easiest way to prevent weeds from growing up around your blueberry bushes it to cover the ground around them with sawdust. Apply more sawdust once a year. For the first few years, it’s important to prune them to keep them in good condition.

Don’t forget to give them fertilizer.

Always use organic fertilizers to avoid damage to the bushes. This will help the plants live longer.

To me, growing my own blueberries sounds like a dream. I’m going to start this spring! If I succeed, the bushes will live for 40 to 50 years, meaning decades of yummy berries!
