In June 2015, Stephanie, her husband Carlos and their four children were involved in a horrific car accident in Brighton, Colorado. Their car drove into a ditch and sadly, Carlos died immediately.
Stephanie herself, along with three of her kids were all seriously injured. The only one left unharmed with no injuries, was their youngest, 2-year-old Sirena.
When the emergency services showed up at the scene, they immediately made sure to look after the injured as fast as they could. Little Sirena was lifted out of the car and handed to police officer Nick Struck.
A picture of Nick and Sirena was later spread all over the internet – it’s pretty difficult not to be touched when you see what Nick did for this little girl.
The image, which was taken two years ago, is now making its way around the internet once more. At the time of the accident, Nick Struck understood that the poor 2-year-old must have been frightened and in a vulnerable state after such a traumatic incident. Therefore, he decided to take her away from where the accident had taken place.
He remembered something he used to do to comfort his own daughter when she was crying, and began to sing Twinkle Twinkle for the little girl.
“I have a two-year-old daughter and she’s my first kid. So of course, your first thought is that could be your little daughter,” He tells 9News
“I know for my daughter, it’s just the attention that someone is there, listening. It’s the same for adults, but kids, they take it on a whole other level, they’ll gravitate to you, and I remember when I was holding her, she was grabbing the back of my arm, which is something my daughter does. Just stroking to the music, ‘twinkle, twinkle.”
Nick comforted Sirena throughout the aftermath of the horrible accident. Whilst her family was being taken to hospitals, she was in the arms of this kind officer who was making sure she was feeling safe and happy.
You are put in situations like this all the time when you’re working a part of an emergency service and as Nick explains in the video, knowing how to comfort people is not something you are necessarily trained for but something you practice as a dad, son or even brother.
Unfortunately, there is no information on how the rest of the family are doing, but I really hope they are ok.
This was a horrible and tragic incident, but the act of kindness by this incredible police officer has moved me to tears. It must have been an uncomfortable situation for him as well but when I see how well he dealt with it all; I realize how important it is to have good officers and what a difference it can make.
