Betty Lynn, who played Thelma Lou on ‘The Andy Griffith Show’, dies aged 95 – rest in peace

Betty Lynn, the actress perhaps best known for her work on ‘The Andy Griffith Show’ has passed away at the age of 95.

According to reports, Lynn died peacefully on October 16, 2021. A private service for her will be held in Culver City, in her home state of California.

Born Elizabeth Ann Theresa Lynn on August 29, 1926, she was enrolled in the Kansas City Conservatory of Music at age five.

Yet it was after returning to the US from Asia – where she had toured with the United Service Organizations tours – that she broke into mainstream American media.

Lynn appeared on Broadway in Oklahoma! (1943) and was thereafter scouted by 20th Century Fox, who allowed her to segway into the world of film.

It was in comedy that Lynn would make her name over the years, both in TV and film. With no project did she enjoy as much success as with ‘The Andy Griffith Show’, however, where she played Thelma Lou for 26 episodes.

“I didn’t want to leave Thelma Lou. I really loved her,” she once shared.

“I enjoyed her. She was sweet and kind, she was so fun to play, and I loved working with Don Knotts – he was so wonderful.”

Indeed, audiences loved her portrayal, and though she largely disappeared from the limelight in recent years, she continued to attend various functions to celebrate the show.

Lynn officially retired from the acting profession back in 2006, and ended up residing in Mount Airy, the birthplace and boyhood home of Andy Griffith himself. There, she continued to make monthly appearances at the Andy Griffith Museum.

Another ‘The Andy Griffith Show’ alumnus, Ron Howard, who played Opie Taylor on the show, paid heartfelt tribute to Lynn, saying she “brightened every scene she was in & every shooting day on set”. He also said that “it was great to have known and worked with her.”

Rest in peace, Betty Lynn! One of my true favorites from ‘The Andy Griffith Show’ and a very funny actress indeed!
