Have your children ever begged you to get a pet? Then you’re not alone.
It seems like most children’s biggest wish is to get a cat or a dog.
But as cute as they are, pets require a lot of time and attention, and, of course, they get bigger — sometimes much bigger — as they grow up.
That last point can sometimes be a problem for families who didn’t really think it through before getting their children a dog, for example.
The story of Patch the dog is unlike anything you’ve ever heard.
Andrew and Clara Davis had their hearts set on a dog, but their parents, Nola and Richard, were skeptical.
Then after some thought, Nola and Richard decided to give it a try and surprise their children with a cute puppy.
However, like many first-time dog owners, they didn’t really pay attention to the breed of the dog they brought home, and Patch grew and grew.
Finally, Nola and Richard realized that Patch no longer fit in their home, and they decided to get rid of him, writes the San Fransisco Globe.
The children were obviously devastated, so their mom, Nola, decided to give Patch another chance for a few days.
And that decision would prove to be more important than Nola ever could have imagined.
The next afternoon, she was in the bathtub relaxing when Patch suddenly stormed in.
The dog grabbed Nola by the wrist and she realized something was up.
She got out of the bathtub to kick him out of the room, and when she opened the door, Nola saw that the hallway was full of smoke.
Like Lassie, Patch led Nolan out of the burning house, where the rest of her family was waiting.
After she was reunited with the rest of the family, Nola remembered that her car keys were still in the house. She headed back for the front door to get them, but Patch blocked her and refused to let her go back in.
Seconds later, the house exploded.
In the end, Patch didn’t just save Nola’s life once that day, but twice. Amazing!
Eternally grateful to Patch, the family moved into a new, larger house where Patch would have plenty of space to play. And later, the incredible dog even got a hero’s award from the American Red Cross.
