He wanted to live away from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles. “There’s definitely not the stressed-out L.A. vibe in San Clemente. It’s way laid-back,” his wife said of the move a few years ago.
The actor also has two older children, Mason and Maya, from a previous marriage to actress Josie Bissett, with whom he starred on Melrose Place.
While Mason lives with them in San Clemente and attends the local high school, Maya lives in Seattle with her mother but visits her father often enough.
The exes have a healthy co-parenting relationship where they prioritize their children. The reason he moved to San Clemente was because of a few reasons, which included the education quality for his kids. The area also allowed the family to have more space than they did in Los Angeles.
They now have a four-bedroom house by the beach which is a big upgrade from the Santa Monica options that come in the same price range. They describe their home as a ‘bubble’ because it has proved to be a wonderful experience for the family.

Erin lived in the area when she first met Estes. Mutual friends set them up on a blind date, and they had their first date in San Clemente, which makes the place super meaningful for them.
Estes was at the time splitting his time between Seattle and Los Angeles. He was staying with his sister in San Clemente when he met Erin. Later Estes got a role in “The Women’s Murder Club” and was able to get a place in Santa Monica.
Even though his career was demanding, he made sure to be present for his family, especially for their nightly family dinner tradition. “Eighty to ninety percent of the time, we all have dinner together every night,” he shared about it.
They also had a very strict “no electronics at dinner” which everyone has to observe to ensure the family gets quality time when they eat together. This makes the family’s bond even better!
Erin said of it, “We’re a strong non-electronic family, and at night our routine with Makai is books, teeth, books, bed.”
Estes finds comfort in gardening and music. He plays music which is a passion for him and has been so since his youth.
Gardening is a big thing for him to do to relax. He finds solace in it when he is stressed. “Trees go away when Rob’s not happy,” his wife Erin joked. Whether it is chopping down trees or tending to his plants, he loves all the responsibility that comes to him.
The actor these days likes his privacy and appreciates the simple tasks of fatherhood and having a home of his own.
