High School Musical made Olesya Rulin a familiar face to Disney fans, but years after the films, the now 40-year-old woman has chosen a very different career away from Hollywood.
Olesya Rulin shot to international fame as the shy pianist and songwriter Kelsi Nielsen in the High School Musical trilogy, starring alongside Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale and Lucas Grabeel as the films became a global sensation almost overnight.
At the height of its success, she reflected on how quickly life had changed.
“This is a dream job,” she told Daily News in 2007. “But I have to be careful to make sure I don’t have things on the Internet. And I can’t just roll out of bed and go to the grocery store in my pajamas.”
Although many of her co-stars continued building acting careers after the Disney franchise came to an end, Rulin’s journey ultimately took her in a very different direction.
Life after Disney
Following the release of High School Musical 3: Senior Year in 2008, Rulin – a professional ballet dancer – continued acting for several years, taking on roles across television and film.
Her credits included appearances in CSI: Miami and The Mentalist, along with recurring parts in Greek and PlayStation Network’s Powers. She also appeared in Flying By, a 2009 film starring Billy Ray Cyrus, and had a starring role in 2013’s Family weekend alongside Kristin Chenoweth and Matthew Modine.
Focus on family
Away from the screen, Rulin’s personal life also changed significantly. She married Joseph Noel Pauline in November 2021, and in 2022, People reported that the couple welcomed their first child, a daughter named Ondine Michelle Pauline.
Announcing the news on Instagram, the new mom wrote: “Ondine Michelle Pauline. Thank you for choosing @joeypauline and I to be your parents.”
She continued: “You have an army of a family that’s been waiting for you. Thank you to all of the life lessons that have brought us to a place where we can welcome you with love in our hearts, peace in our minds, and gratitude in our souls.”
‘The Village Daughter’
While many former child stars remain closely connected to the entertainment industry, Rulin has shifted her attention toward a project that reflects her own upbringing.
Born in what was then Soviet Russia, Rulin has previously spoken about moving to the United States when she was eight years old. Today, she shares content through Instagram and her Substack, The Village Daughter, drawing inspiration from the small Russian village where she spent part of her childhood.
Describing the project in one of her short films, Rulin invites viewers to “come with me and discover a way of life most have forgotten.”
Although she now lives in a small town near California’s Yosemite National Park, much of her content focuses on the village between Moscow and St. Petersburg that helped shape her early years.
Her videos highlight traditional rural life, local customs and the surrounding countryside, offering followers a glimpse into a slower pace of living that contrasts sharply with Hollywood.
Additional projects
Alongside that effort, she also shares wellness-related content and products through her online platforms, giving fans another look at the direction her career has taken since stepping away from regular acting work.
For audiences who remember her as Kelsi quietly composing songs in the halls of East High, Rulin’s life today may come as a surprise.
Rather than chasing blockbuster roles, she has built a career around sharing the traditions, landscapes and values that shaped her long before Disney introduced her to viewers around the world.
