Keanu Reeves reunites with band Dogstar more than 20 years later: ‘It’s something I’ve always missed’

For the first time in 20 years, Keanu Reeves reunited with his band Dogstar and performed on stage at Napa Valley’s BottleRock Saturday.

Reeves admitted he was a bit nervous about playing alongside his indie-rock bandmates, but the trio’s drummer Robert Mailhouse assured the actor and bass player as long as he was “present in the song, and it will go from there.”

Dogstar, which formed in Los Angeles in the mid-1990s before disbanding in the early 2000s, announced their reunion, last year.

Reeves told Billboard the group started playing together again at the start of the pandemic.

“I missed playing together, I missed writing together, I missed doing shows together. It’s something I’ve always missed,” he admits. “We came to a spot where we weren’t playing anymore, and I missed it … Once we started to play, and it felt good, and really positive and creative, that’s when it was like, ‘Okay, let’s make this happen.’”

They all agreed to make another record, and in two months Reeves co-penned enough songs for an album.

While the group has played in private settings since reuniting in 2020, their set at BottleRock marks their first public reunion in more than 20 years.

Although Reeves is currently one of the biggest actors in the world, he’s grateful to be able to return back to where it all began for him.

“It’s a space that I love, and a space that I tried to protect.”

It’s so awesome that Keanu Reeves has been able to reunite with his former bandmates and not only play together, but record as well!
