Inside the devastating private heartbreak Kyle Kennedy and her ex-husband suffered before her tragic death at 42

Kyle Kennedy, granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy, has died at 42. Now, new details about her unimaginable private loss and serious health challenges have come to light.

Kyle Kennedy passed away on September 21; however, it didn’t become public knowledge until now. Her family shared the news through her obituary.

No cause of death was announced for the educator and disability rights advocate, who passed away at her home in Westwood, Massachusetts.

Born on July 6, 1984, in Washington, D.C., Kyle Kennedy spent much of her childhood in Cohasset, Massachusetts, before building a career in education.

According to her obituary, she was passionate about early childhood education and worked to improve opportunities for disadvantaged children. She later became an advocate for people living with disabilities.

After graduating from Georgetown University with a bachelor’s degree in history, Kennedy taught in New York City public schools through the Teach For America program. She later earned a Master of Science in early childhood education from Pace University and a Master of Education in education policy and management from Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Kerr was born and raised in Massachusetts. From 2012 to 2016, he was the state director of Democrats for Education Reform – a Democratic Party organization for the expansion of educational accountability and funding equity.

Kyle Kennedy was the daughter of Michael Kennedy, son of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy. Her father died in a skiing accident in Aspen, Colorado, on New Year’s Eve in 1997, when Kyle was just 13 years old.

Tragically, years later, Kyle would face another devastating loss of her own. She married education advocate and political strategist Liam Kerr in August 2012. The couple later separated, and news of the couple’s divorce was reported in October 2026. Kyle’s obituary referred to Kerr as her ‘former husband’ and ‘ex-husband’.

Together, they had three children: sons Conor and Declan, and a daughter named Josephine. But heartbreakingly, Hisephine, who was Conor’s twin sister, died just days after she was born.

According to Kyle’s family, she held her daughter’s memory close throughout her life. In her obituary, her family paid tribute to her devotion to all three children.

“She will be remembered for her devotion to her children Conor, Josephine, and Declan, and her support for educational reform for disadvantaged children and for people living with disabilities,” they wrote

They also added about Josephine, “whose memory Kyle held close for the rest of hers”

In 2020, Kyle Kennedy had another tragic setback as she suffered a severe spinal cord injury. It resulted in long-term paralysis, disability, and other medical challenges.

Her family explained that “the years that followed brought struggles but Kyle fought to maintain her dry wit and determination through it all, trying to be the best possible mother to her sons and caring for her two beloved, ill-behaved Wheaten terriers.”

Moreover, the Kennedy family said she “began to advocate for people living with disabilities, including testifying at the Massachusetts state house in a hearing on discrimination in disabled health care.”

Kyle Kennedy is survived by her two sons: Conor, 12, and Declan, 10. Rest in peace. Our thoughts and prayers go to her family.
