Mandy Moore reveals she once received a check for a penny for ‘This is Us’ streaming residuals

This Is Us star Mandy Moore has earned very little in residuals from the hit show despite being a lead actor.

Moore, 39, spoke with The Hollywood Reporter while on the picket line outside the Disney lot in Burbank, California Tuesday.

The Emmy-nominated actress was on the picket line in support of the SAG-AFTRA’s strike against Hollywood studios and streamers demanding more equity when it comes to residuals.

“The residual issue is a huge issue,” she said. “We’re in incredibly fortunate positions as working actors having been on shows that found tremendous success in one way or another … but many actors in our position for years before us were able to live off of residuals or at least pay their bills.”

Residuals are the financial compensation that those in the entertainment industry receive when the show they worked on or appeared in is replayed.

However, since streaming services took over those in the entertainment industry have seen very little money, despite their shows airing repeatedly.

Moore recalled times she received “very tiny, like 81-cent checks” for the streaming residuals for This Is Us.

“I was talking with my business manager who said he’s received a residual for a penny and two pennies,” she said.

“If you are someone who has been fortunate enough in our positions to do 120-plus episodes of a successful show in previous years — 10, 15, 20 years ago — that re-airing would be the thing that could sustain you on years where I did this smaller project or I wanted to go do a play or you have kids and you have a family to provide for,” Katie Lowes, Scandal star, said. “And that just not a reality anymore. The entire model has changed.”

Mandy Moore isn’t the only actress showing up on the picket line and speaking out in solidarity with her fellow actors.

Hilary Duff, George Clooney, and Jason Sudeikis has all expressed their support of the strike.

Those who work in the entertainment industry deserve to be compensated for the work they do. If the way shows are distributed changes, then contracts should also change to reflect that.
