Martha Stewart has proven she’s not at all bothered by the icy reception she received on social media this week…
The 82-year-old was widely praised earlier this year after posing for Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit issue in May, but her most recent Instagram uploads haven’t garnered the same positive response from her fans.
On Tuesday (August 29) Stewart uploaded a photo of herself from a cruise that saw her take in the east coast of Greenland. One of her photos shows the businesswoman and TV personality enjoying a cocktail, along with the caption:
“End of the first zodiac cruise from @swanhelleniccruises into a very beautiful fjord on the east coast of greenland. We actually captured a small iceberg for our cocktails tonight.”
Harmless though Stewart almost certainly intended her post to be, it soon evoked the ire of followers who believed her using of the “small iceberg” for her drink was in bad taste.
Before long, Stewart’s comments field was filled with people hitting out at the fact that she’d referenced a small iceberg when the ice caps are melting due to global warming.
Another added: “I generally love Martha and the excesses of her life because he’s about beautiful gardens, homes, and food, but wealthy white people drinking their iceberg cocktails while the planet is in flames is a bit tone deaf.“
Glaciologist Eric Rignot — a professor in the Earth system science department at the University of California at Irvine spoke in defense of Stewart to the Washington Post, saying: “It is not like she went to a glacier and carved a piece of ice off it.”
He added: “Icebergs float at sea already and slowly melt. Whether they melt in the ocean or in your glass does not make a difference.”
Well, it seems Stewart is completely unfazed by the backlash, as she took to Instagram to once again post another pic from her trip.
This time, Stewart commented on a “pleated iceberg”, writing: “Pleated iceberg. perfect for cocktails!”
