Matt Damon opens up about terrible experience kissing Scarlett Johansson – ‘It was hell’

Matt Damon recently shared a humorous anecdote about a kissing scene with Scarlett Johansson during the filming of their 2011 family comedy We Bought A Zoo… And it is pretty hilarious!

In a video for LADBible with his Oppenheimer co-star Emily Blunt, they discussed proper etiquette for shooting kissing scenes. Damon and Blunt agreed that tooth-brushing, mouthwash, and chewing gum were mandatory, though Damon jokingly said he could “forgive some halitosis.”

Reflecting on his onscreen kiss with Johansson, Damon said: “I had to kiss Scarlett Johansson — can you imagine how horrible that was for me?”

To which Blunt responded: “It’s such a shame she has such terrible lips and everything. It must have been so awful.”

Damon continued: “It was hell!” before recounting the incident where they filmed a kissing scene before lunch.

“What happened was, we did a shot before lunch, and it was this nice little two-shot that ended in the kiss. And it was really good. We went to lunch, and she and I both thought it was over, and she ate like an onion sandwich for lunch,” Damon said.

When they returned to the set to film the kissing scene again, Johansson realized her mistake and exclaimed “Aw s***! I literally just had, I had like an onion sandwich. I thought we did this.”

Damon recalled making fun of her onion breath during the filming, even though he didn’t actually smell it. Blunt then asked if he was “still sort of slightly aroused” despite the bad breath, to which Damon insisted that Johansson’s breath “smells like roses.”

Damon has been married to wife Luciana Barroso since 2005 and has daughters Isabella, Gia, and Stella, as well as being a stepfather to Barroso’s daughter Alexia from a previous relationship.

Johansson, on the other hand, shares a daughter with her ex-husband Romain Dauriac and a son with husband Colin Jost, whom she wed in 2020.

In We Bought A Zoo, loosely based on Benjamin Mee’s novel, Damon played a widower and father named Benjamin who decides to move his family and buys a house with a dilapidated zoo on the property. He works with zookeeper Kelly (played by Johansson) to renovate and reopen the zoo and eventually falls in love with her.

As for Damon’s latest project, Christopher Nolan-directed Oppenheimer, it premiered with an $80 million opening at the box office. The historical drama features a star-studded cast, including Damon, Blunt, Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, Gary Oldman, and Kenneth Branagh.

Well, let’s just hope Johansson isn’t reading this!
