A little over 11 years since she rejected his smooth moves, Camila Alves, 41, is now the envy of many women as the wife of Matthew McConaughey. The actor is a doting husband who can’t seem to get enough of his beautiful Brazilian spouse.
In early September, the gorgeous couple, who were in New York for the US Open Tennis Championships, were seen wearing matching white outfits, strolling through the city hand in hand.
As adorable as they were, trolls lashed out at Alves, saying “she’s ugly” and looks “puffy.”

In 2006, the notorious bachelor Matthew McConaughey, now 53, was lovestruck after seeing the gorgeous model, Camila Alves, walk into a nightclub on Sunset Blvd.
Amping up his lovable southern charm, the Texan wasted no time in in introducing himself.
“So, I’m healthily single at a club on Sunset [Boulevard],” the Interstellar actor shared in a 2017 interview with Howard Stern (through US). “And I’m making margaritas at the end of the table, and this figure moves across the room. And I remember [saying] to myself, ‘What is that?’ I didn’t say, ‘Who is that?’ I said, ‘What is that?’ She sits down, and I can’t get my eyes off her, and I’m waving, trying to get her [attention]. … I go over and introduce myself.”
After the party was over, the Mud star convinced the dark-haired beauty to go home with him, but she insisted on sleeping in a guest room, and resisted his advances twice that night.
“That night I spoke 25 minutes of the best Spanish I’ve ever spoken in my life. She spoke Portuguese. I don’t think I ever understood Portuguese as well as I did that night. I was focused. It worked.” Referring to her restraint over his advances, McConaughey continued, “That’s a woman who knows herself. … There [was] no walk of shame. She stayed over, and she knows who she is.”
Though his fate was sealed the moment he laid eyes on her, Alves was resistant.
When he asked her to go on a date the next day, she rejected him again, saying it was her father’s birthday. After two more rejections, she finally broke and went to McConaughey’s home for dinner.
Before the couple married in 2012, they had two children, son Levi (born 2008) and daughter Vida (born 2010).
McConaughey, who earned an Oscar for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club, decided he needed to make Alves his wife and surprised her with the proposal at his family’s home during Christmas 2011.
But, she wasn’t going to make it easy for him.
“I remember hitting the knee, looking into her eyes, and…I remember her face. I remember this smile coming up from her feet. I remember her having to catch her breath. And she didn’t say yes right away. And then the whole family was going, Jeezus, she’s gonna say no.” Speaking with Esquire, the actor continued, “The first words out of her mouth were not yes. I’m not gonna say what it was…But I did say, ‘Look, I’m down on a knee. I’ll stay here awhile. I will outlast you.’ And I did! She conceded.”
Alves married the Wolf of Wall Street actor in June 2012 and months later, they welcomed their third child, son Livingston, who was born December 28.
And anytime the two are seen in public together, McConaughey proves that chivalry is not dead.
In July 2023, the Magic Mike actor was captured in a video where he exits the limousine they were traveling in, and rounding the vehicle, he patiently waits for Alves and adoringly helps her from the car.
The True Detective star then escorts her from the car, posed for photos with his arms wrapped around her back, and before meeting with fans, he ensured she was safely away from scores of people screaming for his attention.
He then grabbed her hand and walked her into the venue.
Recently, on September 10, the duo was spotted on the streets of New York, where they attended the Men’s Singles Final Match during the U.S. Open in Queens.
The actor was seen in a white short-sleeved T-shirt, matching pants, and shoes, while his wife wore off-white slacks, a matching blazer, and her hair loosely tied back, flowing over her shoulders.
The lovebirds complemented their outfits with sunglasses and walked hand-in-hand. The star, who recently authored the book Just Because — a “playful collection of life lessons for readers big and small — is seen again as the perfect gentleman, holding the door open for Alves.
But it wasn’t McConaughey’s chivalry that fans around the world were discussing.
Instead, the online community was flooding the comments section with their unforgiving opinions about Alves’ appearance.
One netizen from Hungary writes, “What did she do to her face? Completely destroyed it with plastic surgery,” while a user from the U.S. shares, “Her face is much fuller and unnatural. She definitely got some work done.” A third says, “She’s ugly.”
Another cyber citizen from the UK defended Alves, writing, “Every comment is slagging off their (mostly her) looks- she looks old/ ageing/ puffy/ bigger/ put on weight etc. Yet if she filtered that would be wrong too. Can’t win with you lot.”
But McConaughey refuses to be influenced by negative public opinions and openly gushes about the woman who changed his world.
“Since that evening I have not wanted to spend time with any other woman, definitely have not wanted to sleep with anyone else. I’ve not wanted to have children with anyone else other than her.” Speaking with People about their enduring love, the Wedding Planner star continued, “We have a love that we never question.”
