In late October 2023, the world was left heartbroken and in shock when news of Matthew Perry’s death emerged. The former Friends star, starring as Chandler Bing, had been found dead in an apparent drowning accident at his Los Angeles home on October 28. He was only 54.
In mid-December, medical officials confirmed that Matthew Perry’s death was an accident caused by the “acute effects of ketamine.”
Matthew Perry had fought addiction for a long time at the time of his death. Fans worldwide expressed their anger and sadness that Perry was gone. Former colleagues, friends, and others paid tribute to the late actor.
Among them were his co-stars on Friends, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer, who paid tribute in a joint statement.
“We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates, we are a family,” the statement read. “There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss.”
Matthew Perry’s funeral was held in Los Angeles, where those closest to him gathered at a small ceremony to bid their final goodbyes. He was then buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles, California.

Now, a new documentary about Matthew Perry has aired. The One About Matthew Perry premiered on Netflix on Tuesday, October 27. The documentary features emotional accounts from people who knew Perry best, including longtime friends Roger Castillo and David Pressman, and several other contributors.
It also features his sister, Mia Perry Bowick. She participated in the documentary to make sure that people got to see a different side of Matthew. Bowick shared insights into Matthew Perry’s fight to get sober, revealing that her brother spent $7 million on “trying to get sober.”
Mia also shared details about Matthew Perry’s close bond with his Friends co-stars. Bowick explained that Perry saw a lot of himself in his Friends character. She said they were very similar, as both used humor to hide how unhappy they were.
The five surviving Friends stars, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer and Lisa Kudrow, all attended Perry’s private funeral in November 2023.
“I remember sitting in the front row with our family and seeing his mom and all the other siblings,” Mia Perry Kudrow said. “And then the rest of the Friends cast all walked in together.

She continued, “I hadn’t seen them in easily 20 years. And Jen Aniston was the first one of them to come up to me and give me a huge hug, but they all did.”
Mia further explained how the late Matthew’s Friends co-stars approached the coffin for one last goodbye.
“All five of them walked up to the casket holding hands, and just stood around him, crying,” Bowick said.
Elsewhere in the Netflix documentary, Matthew Perry’s sister also revealed she laughed at the most horrible moment during the funeral service. Why? She felt her brother’s presence.
“He showed up right behind my right shoulder and goes, ‘How f**ked up is this?’ And I started laughing so hard. I was like, ‘Oh my god – there he is!’ she recalled in the Netflix documentary The One About Matthew Perry.
