Meghan Markle recently appeared on the cover of a major magazine without makeup, which seems to have sparked a major reaction online.
The 44-year-old, who is the Duchess of Sussex, is on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar US December 2025/January 2026 issue. A lot of people immediately took note of her lack of makeup in the picture and began to criticize her choice of a natural look, while others thought that it might have been the magazine’s call instead.
“Harper‘s Bizarre and the photographer must really despise Meghan Markle. I can’t imagine any magazine or photographer letting these pictures grace the cover of any magazine,” one person wrote.
“I think they forgot the airbrush,” another person added.
In the picture, Markle wore a black silk blazer with a cinched waist, the hem was flared, and with a bow detail tying it together in the front. Markle was posted seated on a stool against a grayscale background.
The cover read, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, Meets Her Moment. The story is an unfiltered interview with journalist Kaitlyn Greenidge, and Meghan is candid about the various aspects and details of her life.
She speaks about her love story with Prince Harry, her lifestyle brand As Ever, and about the time she spent in the royal household, along with the eventual decision to leave.
In the interview, the Duchess reflected on her life and how she has grown as a person after the numerous controversies she faced since her engagement to Prince Harry. She mentioned the importance of defining ‘boundaries.’
“I think my boundaries became stronger once I came into the public eye… You find different ways to protect yourself, whether that’s self-preservation or it’s just growing up,” she said.
When asked about her past regrets, Markle said, “You learn not to do it again.”
“If it all goes swimmingly, you don’t learn from it. If you don’t learn anything, you’re not going to grow,” she reflected.
As for the public, a lot of people did not like how she looked, with one person accusing her of copying other celebrities who choose to go sans makeup, one person wrote, “Pamela Anderson wannabe.”
Another wrote, “Can we talk about her hairline? It happens to the best of us- but preferably not on the cover of a magazine. Photoshop anyone?”
Another wrote, “The haggard look with the dead eyes of a soulless shark.”
In the story, Kaitlyn opens the story with her meeting with Markle at a friend’s house on the Upper East Side in New York City. She wrote, “When I enter, the house manager announces, ‘Meghan, Duchess of Sussex,’ even though we appear to be the only other two people in the house.”
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced that they would be stepping down from their royal duties in the later half of 2020. Since then the couple has relocated to California, where they are now raising their two children.
While the couple is no longer working as royals, they have still retained their titles of Duke and Duchess. However, the couple no longer are able to use their His/Her Royal Highness titles.
However, there were others who adored the cover and appreciated it. One person wrote, “Love this cover! To me it encapsulates strength and vulnerability.”
Another wrote, “Love this cover. And a lot of the fashion shows I initially didn’t like have been perfect in editorials.”
