Miley Cyrus has been a household name for years – but it is, in fact, not the one she was born with
Before legally changing her name in 2008, the singer was actually called something else – a detail that has recently surprised many online.
Her mother, Tish, previously explained how the nickname “Miley” came about, revealing it started long before the world knew her as a Disney star or pop singer.
During an appearance on the Tea Time with Raven & Miranda podcast, she said: “Billy Rae [Cyrus] came up with that [the Miley nickname]. She always smiled when she was little, so we would call her smiley Miley, and it just stuck,” according to Tyla.
Despite the name change happening nearly two decades ago, the revelation is still catching some fans off guard.
Miley Cyrus’s real birth name
Cyrus has built a hugely successful career, winning multiple awards and becoming one of the world’s most recognizable pop stars. She first rose to fame on the wildly popular Disney Channel series Hannah Montana and has since remained a major force in the industry.
But even though the world has long known her as Miley Cyrus, her birth name was Destiny Hope Cyrus.
In a previous interview, she explained the meaning behind her given name—and why she ultimately decided to change it.
“It’s a big shoe to fill,” Miley said, according to Miami Herald, revealing her parents “thought it was my destiny to bring hope to the world.”
While she agrees that it’s “lovely,” she also said “it set an intention” for her life from the start, “which we don’t always have.”
“It is lovely. It is a lot,” she said.
