During a recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Nicolas Cage revealed a very interesting fact about himself.

The actor claimed his earliest memory is being in his mother’s womb.

“Let me think. Listen, I know this sounds really far out and I don’t know if it’s real or not, but sometimes I think I can go all the way back to in utero and feeling like I could see faces in the dark or something,” Cage said.

The strange revelation came when Colbert asked the 59-year-old actor some questions during his “Colbert Questionert” segment.

The host asked Cage about his earliest memory and to everyone’s shock Cage replied he recalled being in utero.

He further explained, “Now that I am no longer in utero, I would have to imagine it was perhaps vocal vibrations resonating through to me at that stage. That’s going way back. I don’t know. That comes to mind… I don’t even know if I remember being in utero, but that thought has crossed my mind.”

A study published in the journal Memory in 2021 suggests we can remember things from when we were two and a half years old. Previously it was believed humans could remember things from when they were about three and a half.

Although difficult to pinpoint a person’s exact “earliest memory,” the 21-year study indicated many are able to recall memories from much earlier than previously believed and how much a person remembers is based on numerous factors.

A person’s culture, gender, home environment, and even how they’re asked about their earliest memory could impact their recollection.
