Richard Simmons’ cause of death has been confirmed nearly six weeks after his death on July 13, 2024.
Simmons’ brother Lenny received the news from the LA Coroner’s Office Wednesday morning, according to Tom Estey, the Simmons’ family spokesperson.
“This morning, Richard Simmons’ brother Lenny, received a call from the LA Coroner’s office. The Coroner informed Lenny that Richard’s death was accidental due to complications from recent falls and heart disease as a contributing factor. The toxicology report was negative other than medication Richard had been prescribed. The family wishes to thank everyone for their outpouring of love and support during this time of great loss,” Estey said in a statement to People.
On July 13, the Los Angeles Police Department responded to a 911 made from Simmons’ residence. His housekeeper had dialed 911 after they had found him unresponsive on the floor next to his bed.
The iconic fitness guru was pronounced dead at the scene, and police did not suspect foul play.
He died one day after his 76th birthday.
It was reported Simmons suffered a fall the night before his death and refused medical attention despite his housekeeper’s insistence.
Although he described feeling dizzy, he showed no other signs of injury at the time and said he’d consider seeing a doctor the following day.
Several days after his death the LA Coroner’s Office deferred his cause of death, stating they were awaiting an investigation and additional testing.
A month and a half later investigators revealed Simmons’ “toxicology report was negative” and his death was listed as “accidental due to complications from recent falls and heart disease as a contributing factor.”
Rest in peace, Richard.
