Riley Keough reveals her daughter’s meaningful name: ‘It’s not really a well-known word’

Nearly one year after becoming a mom, Riley Keough is opening up about her daughter for the first time.

The actress and musician welcomed a baby girl in August 2022 via surrogate with her husband Ben Smith-Peterson.

Her name: Tupelo Storm Smith-Petersen.

The 34-year-old chose Tupelo for Tupelo, Mississippi where her grandfather, Elvis Presley was born, and Storm in memory of her late brother Benjamin, whose middle name was Storm. Benjamin Keough died by suicide in 2020 at age 27.

“It’s funny because we picked her name before the Elvis movie,” she told Vanity Fair. “I was like, ‘This is great because it’s not really a well-known word or name in relation to my family — it’s not like Memphis or something. Then when the Elvis movie came out [in 2022], it was like, Tupelo this and Tupelo that. I was like, ‘Oh, no.’ But it’s fine.”

The Daisy Jones & the Six star also explained why even though she is capable of carrying children she chose surrogacy.

“I think it’s a very cool, selfless, and incredible act that these women do to help other people,” Keough said. “I can carry children, but it felt like the best choice for what I had going on physically with the autoimmune stuff.”

She has publicly stated she has Lyme disease, though she has never gone into detail about her symptoms.

Following a months-long legal battle, Keough recently reached a settlement agreement with her grandmother, Priscilla Presley, over Lisa Marie Presley’s estate.

Keough became the sole heir of Lisa Marie’s estate, the new owner of Graceland, and the sub-trusts for her twin 14-year-old sisters.
