Rob Reiner was known for his work both in front of and behind the camera. The Oscar-nominated director was the son of legendary comedian and filmmaker Carl Reiner. He spoke about his marriage and children repeatedly over the years.

On Sunday, December 14, 2025, a man and a woman were found dead in a Los Angeles home owned by Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner. The Los Angeles Fire Department reported to the home at 3:30 p.m. local time to give medical aid. When they arrived at the home, they found two dead, according to reports from the LAFD.

The victims were 78-year-old Rob and 68-year-old Michele, who was allegedly killed by their son, Nick Reiner. Police have made no arrests yet in the case.

Rob, who was born Robert Maxwell Reiner on March 6, 1947, in New York City was the son of Carl Reiner, creator of The Dick Van Dyke Show. After he started his career as an actor in All in the Family, he began to go behind the camera as a director. He went on to work on some of the most famous movies of our times including Stand by MeThe Princess BrideWhen Harry Met Sally…Misery and A Few Good Men. In his career, he had received several Academy Award nominations.

Rob met Michele when he was directing When Harry Met Sally, which eventually led him to change the movie’s ending to a happier one. He said of it, “I met my wife while making the movie and we changed the ending and this is what we came up with. Billy came up with some of this dialogue and that’s how we decided to end the movie, that they do end up together.”

Rob and Michele Singer married in 1989. Together, the couple welcomed three children: sons Jake and Nick and daughter Romy.

Their eldest son, Jake Reiner, worked primarily behind the scenes in Hollywood. He worked as a producer and production executive, which included a lot of his father’s projects; however, he is very private about his personal life.

Nick Reiner, the middle child of the family, was also the most outspoken of all of the children. He spoke candidly about his struggles with his addiction to drugs and homelessness when he was a teenager.

In 2016, Nick spoke in an interview about his years-long struggle, which began when he was a teenager. The drug addiction eventually left him homeless. He shared that he had cycled in and out of rehab since he turned 15, but as he fell deeper into addiction. As he went further and further into addiction, he similarly wandered farther and farther away from home. He even spent a lot of time homeless in multiple states.

He spent many days and weeks sleeping outside. This later became the basis of his semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie, he co-wrote and directed it with his father.

“Now, I’ve been home for a really long time, and I’ve sort of gotten acclimated back to being in L.A. and being around my family,” Nick said in an interview.

Rob Reiner spoke only about how he would support his son as he went through recovery, and also talked of the struggles the entire family had in terms of his addiction.

The youngest in the Reiner clan is Romy Reiner. She has stayed out of the public eye as much as she can. She appeared alongside her parents at certain events but has not pursued a career in Hollywood like her brothers.

Apart from his three children with Michele Reiner, Rob also has a daughter, Tracy Reiner, from his first marriage to actress and filmmaker Penny Marshall. They married in 1971 and adopted their daughter, Tracy, from Michael Henry’s previous marriage. Rob divorced her in 1981.

The death of Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner is heartbreaking. We are sending their family and friends our deepest sympathies in his difficult time.
