Stephen Colbert addresses Kate Middleton jokes made prior to cancer announcement

Once again Stephen Colbert dedicated several minutes of his show to Kate Middleton, but this time he backtracked on previous jokes he made about the princess.

Following his “spilling the tea” monologue, the late night show host not only received backlash for making light of Kate’s disappearance from the public eye, but also for suggesting Prince William had an affair.

“The Kingdom has been all a flutter about the seeming disappearance of Kate Middleton,” Colbert said on the March 13 episode of The Late Show. “Well now, internet sleuths are guessing that Kate’s absence may be related to her husband, and the future King of England, William, having an affair.”

Colbert named Rose Hanbury as the woman at the center of the affair. Hanbury’s attorneys wrote to CBS insisting the allegations were false. Her legal representative told InTouch: “The rumor appears to have entered into the mainstream media recently as a result of another joke made about it on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. We have written on our client’s behalf to CBS and various other reputable media organizations to confirm that the allegation is false.”

On Monday, days after Kate appeared on video announcing her cancer diagnosis, Colbert expressed regret for the “jokes” he made about the princess.

“We do a lot of shows, and I tell a lot of jokes, and I tell jokes about a lot of different things — mostly what everybody’s talking about,” he said. “And for the last six weeks to two months, everybody has been talking about the mystery of Kate Middleton’s disappearance from public life.”

“And two weeks ago, we did some jokes about that mystery and all the attendant fru-fra in the reporting about that, and when I made those jokes, that upset some people, even before her diagnosis was revealed, and I can understand that.”

Colbert’s acknowledgment of his hurtful jokes comes at the same time Blake Lively apologized for poking fun at Kate’s photoshopped Mother’s Day photo.

Several co-hosts of The View have also expressed their regret for going down the “rabbit hole” of speculation in regards to Kate Middleton.

The entire situation is so incredibly sad. So many are guilty of going down the rabbit hole wondering what happened to Kate. I think the entire world needs to apologize to her.
