One of the world’s biggest power couples is no more: football star Tom Brady has announced a divorce from his wife, model Gisele Bündchen.
Brady reportedly released a statement about the divorce on his social media, revealing that he and Bündchen had finalized their divorce, ending their 13-year marriage.
“We have arrived at this decision amicably and with gratitude for the time we spent together,” Brady wrote.
A source close to the couple told People that they had agreed to joint custody of their kids.
“We are blessed with beautiful and wonderful children who will continue to be the center of our world in every way,” Brady wrote. “We will continue to work together as parents to always ensure they receive the love and attention they deserve.”
Brady and Bündchen have two kids together: Benjamin Rein and Vivian Lake. Brady also shares a son, John “Jack” Edward Thomas, with his ex Bridget Moynahan.
In their 13 years together, Brady and Bündchen were one of the most high-profile power couples in the world, each one of the most successful and influential figures in their field.
Tom Brady is one of the most successful and decorated athletes of all time, and is regarded as the best quarterback in NFL history. He has six Super Bowl titles. He spent 20 seasons with the New England Patriots and was central to their historic dynasty.
Now 45, he continues to play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, famously reversing his decision to retire earlier this year. He is the oldest Super Bowl MVP in history.
Bündchen has likewise been a huge success in the fashion industry: the Brazilian model has been one of the highest-paid models in the world since 2001, and is regarded as one of fashion’s most influential people.
It’s a surprising end to one of the world’s best-known celebrity marriages, but sources say their marriage had become strained — and that Bündchen was the one who wanted to call it quits.
“She was upset about it for a long time and it’s still difficult, but she feels like she needs to move on,” a source told People. “She doesn’t believe that her marriage can be repaired.”
An insider also said they had been living “separate lives” during the NFL season: “Gisele is busy with her own life now, and has spent time away from Tom in Miami and New York.”
