Madonna’s return to the MTV Video Music Awards stage quickly became one of the night’s biggest talking points — but not only because of her highly anticipated performance.
Madonna returned to the MTV VMAs this year, marking her first performance at the ceremony since 2003. She appeared alongside Sabrina Carpenter, 27, and Charli XCX, 34, in an unexpected collaboration.
Following the performance, social media was flooded with praise for the Queen of Pop, with many saying she proved once again that she still knows how to put on a show.
“The #VMAs kinda feel important again thanks to this Madonna performance,” one viewer commented, according to Tyla.
“Madonna doing all this at 68 is literally legendary,” another person wrote.
But viewers soon became distracted by one unexpected detail: the shape of Madonna’s costume around her midsection and trousers.
Clips and screenshots from the broadcast spread across social media as viewers tried to figure out what was behind the unusual silhouette.
“It looks like her [backside] is stuffed with something. Do you all see it?” one person asked on X., according to VT.

Others had their own theories.
“With all due respect… why doesnt madonna remove the buttcheeks implants??” another wrote.
Another viewer simply asked, “Isn’t it a diaper?”
“Is Madonna wearing a diaper?” someone else questioned.
The comments continued to pile up.
“Pretty sure I saw something fall out the front,” one person claimed.
One social media user offered an even more blunt theory, writing, “It’s either a very bad Brazilian Butt lift, she has butt pads stuffed in her shorts, or her Depends is full.”
Another added, “I can’t be the only one seeing what’s going on with Madonna BBL.”
By the end of the ceremony, the pop icon had added several more honors to her collection. Madonna won Artist of the Year as well as Best Collaboration for ‘Bring Your Love.’ Her visual project Confessions II – The Film also took home several awards, winning Best Dance, Best Album, Best Long Form Video, Best Choreography and Best Cinematography.
While accepting the award for Best Dance Album, Madonna pulled a practical lighting prop from her outfit and joked with the audience, “First of all, I just want to get this thing out of my a**.”
“It’s been in here all night. Now I can party in a park,” she added.
