Victor Willis, legendary lead singer of Village People, has died at the age of 74.
The band and his wife, Karen Huff-Willis, confirmed his passing on Wednesday in an emotional message.
“We are profoundly sad to announce the death of VICTOR WILLIS, lead singer of Village People,” the band said on Facebook. “Victor passed on Monday, June 30, 2026, of a short but aggressive illness. Privacy is requested.
Willis was one of the most recognizable voices of the disco era and helped shape some of the genre’s most iconic hits. As the lead singer of Village People, he co-wrote and performed classics such as Y.M.C.A., Macho Man, In the Navy and Go West.
Victo Willis died one day before his 75th birthday, often dressed as a cop or naval officer while performing with the beloved disco group. At the height of their success, the Village People became a cultural phenomenon, and Willis stood at its center.

Together, they created Village People, the group that would go on to become one of the defining acts of the disco era. The group rose to international fame in the 1970s by performing in costumes that played on stereotypical macho personas.
Willis alternated between portraying a police officer and a naval officer. At the height of their success, the Village People became a cultural phenomenon, and Willis stood at its center.
He left the band in 1980 and later spent years involved in a legal dispute over copyright to the songs he had written. However, he rejoined the group in 2017 and performed YMCA at President Trump’s pre-inauguration rally in January 2025.

The songs went far beyond disco, becoming global cultural staples heard at sporting events, political rallies and celebrations around the world. In the last decade, the YMCA has been closely associated with Donald Trump, who has used the song at his rallies.
Following the announcement, tributes have begun pouring in from fans worldwide. Victo Willis has been described Willis as a “music pioneer” and the voice of a generation that helped define the sound of the late 20th century.
