If you’ve ever choked on something or been near someone who was choking, you know how terribly frightening it can be.
That feeling of something stuck in your throat and not being able to breathe are extremely tramuatic.
Recently, the family of a 4-month-old baby from Illinois found themselves in distress when the baby began choking. They immediately called 911 and waited for EMS to arrive.
Unbeknown to them, as they waited, Officer Travis Hoguet with the Caseyville Police Department heard the radio call for help.
Hoguet rushed to the scene
The officer arrived before the EMTs and was able to dislodge the object and save the choking baby.
Thankfully, the 4-month-old began breathing on his own and he was able to return home with his family.
Now, the officer is being praised, and rightly so, for his quick-thinking.
Do you know what to do if a baby is choking?
First, identify that they are choking. Once you are sure, call 911. As you wait for EMS to arrive, place the baby face down on your forearm and give them five blows between their shoulder blades.
Turn the child back over and using two fingers, press on their breastbone five times. This will push air into the lungs to help dislodge the object. Repeat as necessary.
Thank you to Officer Hoguet for rushing to the scene and saving this baby’s life.
