A 73-year-old woman sacrificed her life Monday night when strong winds from a storm knocked over her home in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
The strong winds came from a storm known as a derecho. The storm, typically a high wind event, tore through parts of the Midwest.
Multiple locations reported wind gusts over 74 mph and several locations in Iowa tracked wind gusts in excess of 90 mph.
Around 7:45 p.m. on Monday, firefighters responded to a call in Fort Wayne. When they arrived at the address they found a very badly damaged mobile home. According to reports, they also heard a gas leak.
Crews were able to get inside within 10 minutes. They located Isabel Atencio, 73, and a young boy, believed to be her grandson.
Atencio had been clutching the child.
Rescuers pulled both from the debris. The boy was reportedly conscious and suffered only minor injuries, but Atencio was unconscious and transported to the hospital in critical condition.
She was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
“They had to stabilize the trailer, crawl inside the trailer, find the two victims and bring them out,” Adam O’Connor, deputy chief of the Fort Wayne Fire Department said.
“It’s awful. I was thinking about that all last night,”
