A woman who nearly died after being struck by a truck at 18 claims she was carried toward a “very evil” place before God intervened and left her with a life-changing warning.
As an 18-year-old, LuAnn VanBuskirk was riding her bike through downtown Big Rapids, Michigan, when a mistake at a four-way intersection suddenly put her in the path of a truck, turning an ordinary day into an experience the now-61-year-old mother says completely changed what she believed about life, death and God.
‘So still and so quiet’
Speaking on God Encounters with Janie DuVall, VanBuskirk recalled hitting the pavement and realizing immediately that something was seriously wrong.
Her body, she said, was left “in a splat” and “contorted” on the road as an eerie calm settled over everything around her.
“I’m like, ‘What am I going to do? Um, this is bad. I know this is really bad,’” she recalled. “It was just so still and so quiet.”
Then her perspective suddenly changed.
VanBuskirk claims she found herself outside her body, looking down at the accident scene from above while people gathered around her below.
But the experience she describes was far from the peaceful journey sometimes associated with near-death accounts.
‘Nasty and gnarly’ fingers
VanBuskirk said she suddenly became aware of something gripping her arm.
“Then suddenly I felt this hand, these fingers going around my arm, and I looked down and these fingers were nasty and gnarly,” she recalled, adding that whatever had her, was “clearly not angelic.”
“I know this is not going well for me. I know that I’m going someplace I do not want to go,” she recalled thinking.
“Just the fingers on that hand was a test, like testify to me that I am not in a good spot,” she said of the eerie moment.
‘I’m going to hell’
VanBuskirk said she was powerless to resist as the entity pulled her toward what appeared to be “a very evil, wicked city” that was covered in “horrible yellow nasty smog” – a place she interpreted as hell.
“And now I’m going to hell based on my own free will choices,” the former party girl recalled thinking.
Then, she claims, everything changed again when thunder cracked and an overwhelming sound filled the experience.
“It was a sound. It wasn’t a voice. And when it spoke, it just shook me,” VanBuskirk said, describing it as a sound that “reverberated.”
That’s when she claimed she was in the presence of God.
‘Even the demons believe in Jesus’
At the time, however, faith was something she had struggled with, but she tried to defend herself by saying, “I know who Jesus is.”
Failing to persuade the presence, she explained that she then heard a response that came with a “thunderous” force: “Everything in me just shook like a dead man twice.”
“This sound said, ‘Even the very demons believe in Jesus. How do you say you do better?’” she recalled hearing.
For VanBuskirk, there was no easy response.
“That was a moment of truth that I could not argue,” she said.
“Even the demons believe in Jesus. How do I say I do better than the demons? Demons aren’t going to heaven,” she said in the interview. “And I’m like, ‘Oh no, I am in really bad trouble.’”
God turned back on her
VanBuskirk claims she was then forced to confront her life in extraordinary detail, reliving repeated refusals to accept Jesus along with the choices she regretted.
“I was given every single opportunity to accept Jesus and I said no,” she recalled. “I’m given another opportunity to accept Jesus and I said no, and it was opportunity after opportunity after opportunity.”
“Then it was every sin I have ever committed. Every single one, not a one left out,” she said, adding that during this chat session, she never saw God’s face.
“I didn’t see the face of God. I didn’t see him in his entirety before he turned his back. I just saw he was turning and I only saw his back,” she said.
“I stood there just really feeling defeated that, am I that bad that God would turn his back on me?” she recalled of the crushing moment. “And it was just this moment of realizing, girl, you really messed up.”
Then the experience stopped as abruptly as it had started.
“And then bam, the next thing I know, I am back in my body,” she said, recalling her broken body being lifted into an ambulance.
‘My word says….’
More than four decades after the crash, VanBuskirk, who has since welcomed Jesus into her life, remains convinced that what happened to her at 18 carried a message about faith that she was meant to understand.
Knowing about Jesus, she came to believe, was not enough on its own – a lesson she says was delivered to her with a warning she couldn’t ignore.
“My word says, unless you’re born again, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven,” she recalled of the message allegedly delivered to her by God.
